FAIRBORN, Ohio - Junior Kayla English nearly completed the perfect game as she tossed a one-walk no-hitter Thursday night at Wright State as the University of Dayton softball team shutout WSU, 9-0, at WSU Softball Field. Senior Dana Trotta nearly hit for the cycle, missing only a double on the night.

Five Flyers posted multiple-hit games, including Trotta - one of three UD players with three hits in the game. As a team, Dayton (11-16) recorded 14 hits and were perfect in the field with zero errors. The Raiders were held without a hit and committed two miscues.

Senior Rachel Archer extended her hitting streak to seven straight games, the longest for the Flyers this season.

Dayton exploded for five runs in the first inning on the strength of a grand slam from Trotta and the Flyers never looked back. The Flyers tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth after Trotta tripled and came home on freshman Katie Ryan's RBI-single up the middle. Ryan was plated on a double from junior Natalie Mariano to give UD the 7-0 advantage.

Wright State (5-18) had only one base runner in the game, a walk in the bottom of the fifth, to negate the Flyer perfect game. But the next batter was struck out looking to end the inning.

Sophomore Kathryn Hess knocked out a two-run blast in the sixth for the Flyers as UD claimed the 9-0 win over WSU.

English (7-6) earned the no-hit, complete-game shutout win in the circle for the Flyers. She faced only 19 batters over six innings as she struck out five and walked one.

Krystian DeWitt (2-7) was charged with the loss for the Raiders. She struck out four and walked one while giving up five runs (zero earned) on seven hits in three innings of work. Montana Wear finished the game for the Raiders, striking out two.

The Flyers are back in action this weekend as they play host to Atlantic 10 foe La Salle for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon on Saturday at UD Softball Stadium and admission is free.
