Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of Dayton softball team split its final regular season road Atlantic 10 series at George Washington Sunday afternoon at GW Softball Field. The Flyers picked up the 8-2 win in game one and fell to the Colonials, 3-0, in the nightcap. Freshman Hannah DeSalvo recorded a hit in her only official at-bat of the day, her first collegiate home run, to go along with one walk on the day while freshman Gabrielle Snyder went 3-for-5 at the plate for the Flyers.
Senior Rachel Archer also recorded three hits on the afternoon while junior Kayla English gave up just two earned runs over 7.1 innings pitched in the series. With seven conference wins, the Flyers currently sit in sixth place in league standings with two more A-10 games to play. The top six teams earn bids to the 2104 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship.
GAME ONE: Dayton 8, George Washington 2 | Box Score (PDF)
Dayton (23-27, 7-9 A-10) got on the board first in the first inning as Archer led off with a triple to right field. Senior Kasi Vazquez picked up a RBI on her sacrifice flyout, giving UD the 1-0 lead. The score remained the same until the top of the third when the Flyers plated three more runs. Three UD batters were walked to load the bases and the Colonials went to the bullpen for a new pitcher. With two outs, freshman Gabrielle Snyder singled in junior Natalie Mariano and sophomore Kirsten Bartlett scored on a Colonial error. Junior Tiffany Ricks was the third Flyer to score on senior Jordan Jennings' RBI single. Heading to the bottom of the frame, Dayton was ahead 4-0.
George Washington (17-30, 3-11 A-10) got its first run across in the bottom of the third with a solo home run to left field and despite getting two runners on, the Colonials could not convert. The Flyers loaded the bases again in the top of the fourth and as Isaacson reached first on a Colonial error, Mariano and sophomore Kathryn Hess raced home. Isaacson's subsequent attempt to steal second was thwarted but Ricks was able to scramble home on the play for UD's third run of the inning. Heading to the bottom of the fourth, the Flyers were cruising, 7-1.
The Colonials got a run back in the bottom of the fifth with a RBI-single but the Flyers got out of the frame with no more damage. UD scored one more in the seventh as freshman Hannah DeSalvo knocked out her first career home run to set the score at 8-2 in favor of the Flyers, which would be the final score.
Junior Kayla English (14-13) earned the win in the circle for Dayton after throwing 6.1 innings. She struck out four to five walks and gave up two earned runs on five hits. Sophomore Emily Froment closed out the game for UD, working the final two outs. She walked one and allowed one hit.
Paige Kovalsky (0-4) was charged with the loss for George Washington after working 2.1 innings. She struck out two to four walks and gave up two earned runs (four runs) on two hits. Courtney Martin finished the game for the Colonials, striking out two and also giving up two earned runs on seven hits.
GAME TWO: George Washington 3, Dayton 0 | Box Score (PDF)
The Colonials put up a run in the third inning after a GW batter doubled and made it to third on the throw to set up a sacrifice bunt by the next batter to plate the runner. Megan Linn's two-RBI-double in the fourth brought across the Colonials final two runs of the game to give George Washington the 3-0 lead, which would be the final margin.
Archer recorded two of the Flyers three hits in the second game of the day. Dayton threatened with bases loaded and one out in the fifth inning but the final two Flyer batters were put out to end the rally.
Snyder (6-8) was charged with the loss in the circle for Dayton after pitching four innings. She struck out four to zero walks and gave up three earned runs on five hits. Froment worked one out and English tossed one complete inning of middle relief. Junior Lyndsey Diggs closed out the game for UD, getting the final two outs of the game.
The Flyers will return to action May 3 as they welcome the Fordham Rams to UD Softball Stadium. The doubleheader starts at noon and admission is free.
