2014 A-10 Championship Bracket DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton softball team put together an unlikely sweep of Atlantic 10 Regular Season Champions Fordham, 10-9 (10) and 7-3, Saturday afternoon at UD Softball Stadium on Saturday. With its 10-inning, 10-9 win in the first game, Dayton punched its ticket to the 2014 A-10 Softball Championship to be played May 7-10 in Bronx, N.Y., at Fordham's Murphy Athletic Complex. Senior Jordan Jennings went 3-for-7 at the plate with two home runs, five RBI and four runs scored for the Flyers.
This will be Dayton's third appearance in the A-10 Tournament over the last four seasons and the Flyers' 25 wins this season is the most in head coach Cara LaPlaca's career and the most in a season for UD since 35 wins in 2000. With five doubles in the first game, the Flyers set a new single-season team record for doubles and UD now has 82 doubles for the season. Freshman Gabrielle Snyder continues to prove her team Rookie of the Year award after a 5-for-7 day at the plate with two doubles, a home run, two RBI and four runs scored while also claiming the win in game one and a save in game two in the circle for the Flyers.

It took 10 innings but Dayton (25-27, 9-9 A-10) clinched a berth in the A-10 Championship with a 10-9 win over Fordham (33-18, 13-3 A-10), snapping the Rams' 15-game winning streak in the process. Junior Tiffany Ricks picked up a RBI-single to plate the game's first run in the first inning and Jennings knocked out a two-run homer in the second to give the Flyers the 3-0 advantage. The Rams scored a single run in the third with a sacrifice fly out but the Flyers added two more in the bottom of the frame as Ricks took her turn at a two-run long ball to give UD the 5-1 advantage.
Fordham scored a run in the fourth and fifth and then sent out its own two-run homer in the sixth to pull the teams even at five runs apiece. The two squads would head into extra innings to decide the outcome and the Rams put together a four-run eight to seemingly put the game out of reach. The Flyers had other ideas.
With one out, four consecutive Dayton batters doubled to plate three runs. The Rams went to the bullpen but senior Rachel Archer singled in sophomore Kennedy Haynes to tie the game at 9-9. On to the 10th inning the two teams would go. After a scoreless top half of the frame for Fordham, senior Dana Trotta led off with a single and was moved over on a sacrifice bunt. Haynes was up next and singled to right field, enabling Trotta to reach home for a walk-off, RBI-single to win the game and send the Flyers into post-season play.
Snyder (7-8) earned the win in the circle for Dayton after working the final four innings of the game. She struck out three while walking two and gave up four earned runs on six hits. Junior Kayla English started the game, tossing four innings with four strikeouts while sophomore Emily Froment worked 1.2 innings of relief with three strikeouts. Junior Lyndsey Diggs faced three batters in the sixth, striking out one and giving up one earned run.
Rachel Gillen (8-4) was charged with the loss for Fordham. She worked two innings, striking out one and giving up one earned run on three hits. Michele Daubman started the game for the Rams, throwing two innings and giving up five earned runs while Lauren Quense worked 5.1 innings of relief, striking out four but giving up four earned runs.
GAME TWO: Dayton 7, Fordham 3 | Box Score (PDF)
It was Fordham's turn to notch the first run of the game in the nightcap Saturday afternoon with a RBI-single through the left side. Dayton answered in the bottom of the inning as Ricks singled in junior Natalie Mariano to tie the game at one run apiece. Jennings did it again in the second inning as her two-run homer put the Flyers up, 3-1, on the Rams.
Fordham got a run across on a Dayton throwing error and, with a runner on third, a Ram ground out plated a second run in the third inning, evening up the game at three runs apiece. The Flyers matched the Rams in the bottom of the frame as Snyder took her turn at a two-run long ball that soared over the center field fence, returning the lead to Dayton, 5-3.
Two insurance runs went on the board for UD in the sixth inning as the first three batters of the frame loaded the bases. Archer singled in Snyder and Mariano's single to left plated Jennings to set the score at 7-3 in favor of Dayton, which proved to be the final margin.
English (15-13) was the pitcher of record when the Flyers took the lead for good in the bottom of the third. She pitched two innings with one strikeout, one walk and two runs on two hits. Froment started the game, working the first inning and returning for the fourth, fifth and sixth. She struck out three to zero walks and gave up one run on three hits. Snyder collected the save after working the final inning and facing the potential tying run on deck with runners at first and second. With her fifth save of the season, Snyder ties the Dayton single-season saves record set by current season Alysha Isaacson in 2013.
Daubman (15-10) took the loss for the Rams after giving up the winning run in the third. She worked two innings, striking out two and walking one. Gillen started the game for Fordham and worked the first two innings, striking out two and walking one while giving up three earned runs on five hits. Quense closed out the game for Fordham, striking out one and giving up two earned runs over the final two innings.
The Flyers earned the No. 5 seed in the upcoming championship and will square off against No. 4 Massachusetts in the first game of the tournament. The Flyers and Minutewomen will square off at noon Wednesday, May 7 at Fordham.
