BRONX, N.Y. - The fifth-seeded University of Dayton softball team dropped its first game of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship, 7-2, to the fourth-seeded Massachusetts Minutewomen Wednesday afternoon at Fordham's Bahosey Field. Junior Tiffany Ricks and sophomore Kennedy Haynes each recorded a home run in the game to account for the Flyers' two runs.

Ricks was the only Flyer to tally more than one hit on the day, going 2-for-3 with a walk. The Minutewomen outhit the Flyers, 9-5, and UD committed one error to UM's three miscues.

Massachusetts (16-20-1) got on the board first with back-to-back extra-base hits in the first inning, plating the lead-off batter to go up 1-0 on UD.

Dayton (25-28) evened the score at one run apiece in the top of the third as sophomore Kennedy Haynes knocked out her third long ball of the season.

The Flyers' Ricks sent a long ball soaring over the high fence in left center, landing on the tennis court, to put Dayton ahead, 2-1, in the top of the sixth. The Minutewomen's bats came alive in the bottom of the frame, plating six two-runs as UMass reclaimed the advantage, 7-2.

Despite its two-out, bases-loaded rally, Dayton could not convert in the top of the seventh and Massachusetts claimed the win.

Sophomore Emily Froment (1-5) was charged with the loss after working three innings of relief. She struck out five while walking only one and gave up three earned runs on three hits. Junior Kayla English started the game for the Flyers in the circle and tossed 2.2 innings while striking out two, walking two and giving up one earned run. Freshman Gabrielle Snyder closed out the game for UD, giving up one earned run.

Caroline Raymond (10-11) earned the win for Massachusetts after throwing a complete game. She recorded zero strikeouts to four walks and gave up two runs on five hits.

The Flyers will return to action this evening in an elimination game against the loser of No. 3 Saint Joseph's and No. 6 La Salle, which is currently in progress.
