COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The University of Dayton women's soccer team opened up the 2014 season with the No. 9 team in the country in the Texas A&M Aggies on Friday night in Texas.
After lead early on and battling back to even the score in the final 10 minutes, the Flyers were unable to fend off the host squad and suffered a 4-3 loss at the hands of the Aggies.
The Flyers opened up the scoring in the 13
th minute with a goal by junior
Nicole Waters after a clearance by the Aggies failed to clear the 18-yard box. The Ontario native settled the ball at her feet before driving it into the back in the net from 15 yards out. That gave Dayton the early advantage.
That lead held up until the 38
th minute when Texas A&M answered with their first goal, a shot by Bianca Brinson. The host Aggies went on to score again the 51
st minute and 56
th minute with a pair of goals by Kelley Monogue.
Despite leading early, the Flyers went into the last half hour of the contest with a 3-1 deficit. A flurry of activity was soon to follow though as Dayton and Texas A&M battled for control of the game.
Dayton was eager to get the momentum back in its favor and was able to do just that when
Ashley Campbell scored on the assist by Waters in the 82
nd minute. Waters passed the ball into Campbell from the left side of the six-yard box for the second score of the contest for the Flyers.
Just 19 seconds later off the following kick off, Dayton got possession back with a free kick from 25 yards out. Waters evened the score at 3-3 with a rocketed shot that went left of the keeper.
The score remained tied for just a few moments though as the Aggies got the decisive goal in the 83
rd minute on a strike by Shea Groom. Monogue continued to cause head aches for the Flyer defense and provided the assist.
In the end, Dayton came up just short with a hard-fought 4-3 loss to No. 9 Texas A&M.
Waters picked up a pair of goals in the contest, including the first of the year for Dayton, while adding an assist. Campbell score her first goal of the season as well. Sophomore
Elizabeth James played well in goal for the Flyers, recording five saves.
The Flyers (0-1) will next face Rice in Houston on Sunday, Aug. 24 at 2 p.m. ET.
