Box ScoreCLEVELAND, Ohio - In its second match of the Cleveland State Invitational, the University of Dayton volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (24-26, 25-21, 23-25, 23-25) decision to the host Vikings Saturday afternoon. Junior Alaina Turner led the Flyers with 18 kills and a career-high 22 digs.
Also for the Flyers, junior Jill Loiars recorded 13 kills and five blocks while junior Jenna Jendryk added 11 kills and four blocks. Freshman Jane Emmenecker set a career-high 49 assists and senior Isolde Hannan tallied five blocks and four kills for UD. Junior Janna Krafka passed a match-high 23 digs to go with recorded two service aces and freshman Amber Erhahon tallied a career-high nine kills.
As a team, the Flyers recorded 10 blocks and 62 kills to the Vikings eight blocks and 53 kills. CSU out-hit UD, .224 to .190, but the two were even with three service aces each.
Dayton (5-3) opened the match with a 4-2 lead following a kill from Agu but Cleveland State (5-4) used a 8-0 run to go up, 10-4. The Flyers rallied with a run of their own, rattling off four straight to get within two, 10-8. A Turner kill would tie the set at 12-all and rest of the frame would remain close. UD faced set point at 24-23 but a CSU service error kept the Flyers alive. The Vikings would hold on for the 26-24 win in the first set to take a 1-0 match lead.
A kill from Turner kick started a 3-0 run for the Flyers to put UD up, 6-4, over CSU in the early going of the second set. The Flyer lead was four, 10-6, following a kill from Emmenecker and then five, 13-8, after Loiars laid down a kill. The Vikings signaled for timeout and out of the break, the Flyers were first to 15 as they led, 15-11. CSU would get no closer than two points the rest of the way. An Erhahon-Jendryk assisted block gave the Flyers set point and Jendryk recorded the set-winning kill to give UD the 25-21 second-frame win to even the game at one set each.
The Flyers had a four-point, 6-2, advantage in the third set but the Vikings rallied to even the score at 6-6. A 3-0 spurt from Dayton bumped its lead back to three, 9-6, but UD found itself even with CSU again at 10-all. After six more tied scores, Cleveland State took a two-point, 18-16, advantage late in the frame. The two squads were even again at 19 points apiece and the Flyers were able to go ahead on back-to-back points. A Viking kill tied the set at 23-23 and CSU took the set, 25-23, after consecutive Dayton attacking errors.
After scoring the first two points of the fourth frame, Cleveland State gave up two straight to Dayton. The Flyers stayed with the Vikings but found themselves down four, 11-7. A CSU attacking error and consecutive kills from Jendryk shortened the Viking lead to one, 11-10, but Cleveland State would not give up the lead. The Flyers finally evened the score at 19-19 with a Krafka service ace and took the lead at 23-22 on a Viking miscue. Cleveland State would score the next three points to take the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.
The Vikings were led by Christina Toth with 18 kills and Maggie Hannon with 14 kills and five blocks.
The Flyers return to action this evening with a 4:30 p.m. match-up with Navy to conclude the Cleveland State Invitational.,
