CHARLOTTE DEFEATS VOLLEYBALL, 3-1, IN RADISSON INVITE OPENER

Turner, Jendryk and Erhahon with Double-Digit Kills for the Flyers

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - In its first match of the UNF/JU Radisson Invitational, the University of Dayton volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 12-25, 20-25) decision to Charlotte at North Florida's UNF Arena. Junior Alaina Turner led three Flyers in double-double kills with a match-high 16 to go with 14 digs for the double-double.

Also for the Flyers, junior Jenna Jendryk tallied 11 kills while freshman Amber Erhahon had 10 kills and was firing at a .556 clip. Freshman Jana Emmenecker set 43 assists and senior Isolde Hannan led the Flyers at the net with five blocks.

A 7-1 run by Dayton (7-4) in the first set put UD up, 8-3, on Charlotte (9-5) in the early going of set one. The Flyer lead was five again, 10-5, but the Niners battled to cut the advantage to one, 11-10, with a service ace. UD scored three straight to stretch its lead back out to four, 15-11, but the set was tied at 17 after a Flyer attacking error. A Niner service error gave the Flyers the lead back for good at 20-19 and Dayton went on to take the first set, 25-20.

Charlotte started quick in the second set, going ahead of Dayton, 6-1, but the Flyer deficit was cut to one, 6-5, after a Niner attack error. Loiars tied the frame at 11 points apiece with a kill and Dayton used a 4-0 spurt to go up two, 17-15. The two squads would be tied five more times before Charlotte reached set point at 24-21 but Dayton wouldn't go down quietly. An assisted block and a kills kept the Flyers alive but the Niners took the set, 25-23, to even the match at one frame each.

Another strong start for the 49ers in the third set, scoring the game's first six points. The Charlotte lead ballooned to 11, 14-3, after back-to-back kills from Semen Sen and it was 11 again, 18-7, on a Niner service ace. The Flyers battled with a 5-0 run on the strength of four kills to cut the advantage to six, 18-12, but the 49ers continued to cruise. Charlotte went ahead in the match, 2-1, with the 25-12 win in the third set.

The fourth started very similar to the third with Charlotte holding the 6-1 lead early on. A kill from Turner cut the Niner advantage to two, 8-6, but it was back to five, 13-8, after a Flyer attack error. Trailing by eight at 22-14, Dayton cut it back to five, 23-18, but face match point at 24-18. Despite holding twice, the Flyers dropped the fourth set, 25-20, and the match, 3-1.

The Niners were led by Sen with 14 kills and Shelby Green with a match-high 27 digs.

The Flyers return to action this evening with a 7 p.m. match against Jacksonville at JU's Swisher Gym.
