Flyers Play At Ohio State Tournament In Columbus This Friday And Sunday

The University of Dayton women's soccer team will play in the Ohio State Tournament on Sept. 5 vs. the host Buckeyes at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio at 7 p.m. ET. UD will then play Indiana at the same venue on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. Both Big Ten squads earned a berth to the 2013 NCAA Tournament. Indiana is coached by former UD assistant Amy Berbary (at UD from 2004-2008). Her assistant at IU, Sergio Gonzalez, was also a Flyer assistant coach (2006-2010).

THE SERIES
• The Buckeyes lead the series 8-3-1 over Dayton. The last time these two teams met, UD came away with a 1-0 win in Columbus on Sept. 14, 2011. In 2010, the Flyers beat Virginia Tech 3-0 in Columbus, Ohio in the NCAA First Round. UD then tied Ohio State in the NCAA Second Round, but the No. 17 Buckeyes advanced on penalty kicks, 4-2. OSU made a run all the way to the Final Four that season. UD is 2-3-1 all-time when playing at Ohio State. 
•The series is tied 1-1-0 vs. Indiana and UD. Dayton won the last meeting 4-1 on Aug. 22, 2008 in its home opener at Baujan Field. IU defeated the Flyers 2-0 in Bloomington, Ind. on Aug. 31, 1996. 

FLYER FACTS
• Dayton returns its top goal scorer junior forward Ashley Campbell (18 goals, 5 assists), who also led the A-10 and was named A-10 Offensive Player of the Year. UD also returns junior midfielder Nicole Waters (4 goals, 17 assists) who led the nation in assists per match in 2013.
• The Flyer captains this season are senior Chelsea Rose, and juniors Ashley Campbell and Nicole Waters. 
• Last year, UD was 13th in the nation in scoring offense (2.38), tied for 13th in assists (2.24 apg) and 15th in points (7.00). Dayton led the A-10 in points and scoring offense. 

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
OHIO STATE

The Buckeyes are 1-3-0 going into the match vs. the Flyers.  OSU started the season with a 1-0 win over Duke, but have since dropped three consecutive matches: a 1-0 loss to No. 4 North Carolina, a 3-1 loss to No. 4 Virginia Tech and a 1-0 double overtime loss to Toledo. Junior Michela Paradiso leads OSU with one goal and one assist.  OSU is ranked No. 5 in the NSCAA Great Lakes Region. 

INDIANA
The Hoosiers are 2-2-0 with wins over Indiana State (2-0) and UC Irvine (2-1 in overtime). IU lost to Eastern Michigan (0-2) and Georgia Southern (0-2). Jessie Bujoubes leads Indiana with two goals. 

UP NEXT
The Flyers play at No. 16 Santa Clara on Friday, Sept. 12 at 10 p.m. ET and then at No. 4 Stanford on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m. ET.  UD returns home to host Ohio on Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m. ET at Baujan Field. The first 150 fans will receive a 2014 UD women's soccer team poster. Fans can also pick up a punch card for the 2014 Dayton Flyer soccer scarf. With seven punches fans will receive a free scarf.

FLYERS IN THE POLLS
UD jumped to No. 4 in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region rankings.  UD is also receiving votes in the second edition of the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women's National Poll. The Flyers were not ranked in either of  last week's polls.

WATERS EARNS 2ND A-10 POTW HONOR
Nicole Waters earned her second straight Player of the Week nod after helping the Flyers to two wins last weekend (Aug. 29 &31). Against UC Santa Barbara, the junior netted the game-winning goal and added an assist in a 2-0 victory. Then in Dayton's 5-1 win over Murray State, Waters recorded three assists, totaling six points on the weekend. The Terra Cotta, Ontario, native, leads the Flyers and the A-10 with 13 points in four games.

FLYER SUCCESS 
The Dayton women's soccer program owns an overall record of 408-164-45 (.698) since it became a varsity program in 1984. The Flyers made NCAA Tournament Appearances in 1998, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010 and 2011, advancing to the second round in both 2009 and 2010 and to the Sweet Sixteen in 2001. 

PLAYING FOR NATIONAL PRIDE
The Flyers have two players that have trained or played with the Canadian National Team. Junior forward Ashley Campbell (Bradford, Ontario), and junior midfielder Nicole Waters (Terra Cotta, Ontario) earned their first-ever international caps when the U-20 Canadian National team took on Norway July 31. It was a part of the Women's National Excel camp in Copenhagen, Denmark. While overseas, they played in three matches against a local professional team, and teams from Norway and Denmark. Campbell played 147 minutes in four matches with one start in the 2014 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
• Sophomore forward Diarra Simmons (Toronto, Ontario) played for the Trinidad and Tobago National Team in a U-17 FIFA World Cup.

SISTER SISTER
• Senior Kelsey Smigel was Dayton's fourth leading scorer as a freshman. Her younger sister junior Alyson Smigel has played in six games in her career. Both played at perennial high school powerhouse Walsh Jesuit. 
• Twin sisters Alexis and Kaitlynn Kiehl committed to the UD women's soccer team after graduating early from Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati. They enrolled in classes at UD in the 2014 spring semester to get a jump on their collegiate careers.  Alexis Kiehl was named All-Ohio Second Team and first team all-conference her senior season, as well as All-Area Southwest. She is a three-time all-conference selection. She has been involved with Olympic Development Programs since 2010. Kaitlynn is a two-time All-Area Southwest selection, and three-time all-conference honoree, including first team accolades in 2012 and 2013. She has been involved with Olympic Development Programs since 2011.
