NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference released its men's soccer season awards on Wednesday and recognized seven University of Dayton student athletes for their accomplishments in 2015.
Senior
Amass Amankona took home a pair of the top awards, earning Offensive Player of the Year and Midfielder of the Year honors.
Amankona led the Flyers throughout the season, serving as the creator in the nation's No. 1 offense. The diminutive central midfielder had career highs with 10 goals, five assists, 25 points, and 44 shots. In A-10 play alone, Amankona had four goals and two assists, totaling 10 points. He finished the regular season ranked second in the league in points and goals, and fourth in assists. On top of his two A-10 Player of the Week accolades, Amankona is also a Top 10 finalist for the Senior CLASS Award.
First Team All-Conference awards went to Amankona, as well as senior forward
Maik Schoonderwoerd (9 goals, 6 assists), junior forward
James Haupt (6 goals, 5 assists), and junior defender
Lalas Abubakar (1.17 GAA, 4 shutouts).
Senior midfielder
Kissima Bojang (3 goals) earned Second Team All-Conference accolades while freshman forward
Kennedy Nwabia (1 goal) was named to the All-Rookie Team.
The Atlantic 10 Conference also announced its All-Academic team with Dayton leading the way with three recipients, the most by any A-10 school. Amankona, Haupt, and senior
Andrew Lightner were all named to the All-Academic team for their achievements in the classroom.
The Dayton offense, not only led the nation in total goals and scoring offense this season, but it also tied the single-season goal record in program history. UD finished the regular season with a 10-5-3 record overall and a 5-1-2 A-10 mark. Dayton earned the No. 2 seed in the A-10 tournament.
The Flyers will compete in the Atlantic 10 Championship quarterfinals vs. No. 7 seed Duquesne on Thursday at 5 p.m. ET in Fairfax, Va.
