DAYTON FALLS SHORT IN DOUBLEHEADER AT DAVIDSON

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Dayton Flyers baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader on Saturday at Davidson.

Game 1 – Davidson 11   Dayton 0
The Davidson Wildcats started the scoring by getting two runs in the bottom of the first inning. An inning later, Dayton had a great chance to get on the scoreboard when Aaron Huesman singled to left field. Alex Harris followed with a double to left center to move Huesman to third base. However, Davidson pitcher Rob Bain got a groundout to end the top-half of the inning.

The score remained 2-0 until the third inning, when the Wildcats tacked on four runs to increase their lead to 6-0. Davidson added another run in the fourth inning and scored two runs in the seventh and eighth innings to extend the lead to 11-0.

The Flyers had another good opportunity to score in the top of the eighth inning. Glenn Jones reached base on a bunt single and stole second base. With Jones in scoring position, Sergio Plasencia walked to put runners on first and second. Dayton would not cross the plate though, as Bain was again able to get a groundout to end the scoring threat.

Noah Buettgen (L, 2-5) pitched six innings, giving up seven runs (five earned) and striking out four batters. Eric Ashbrook, Jason Johnson, and Mark Giesler made appearances out of the bullpen during the game.

Alex Harris, A.J. Ryan, Aaron Huesman, Glenn Jones, Matt Poland, and Mitch Coughlin each had a hit for the Flyers.
Davidson scored 11 runs on 15 hits and stranded 13 runners on base. Dayton finished with six hits and left eight runners on base.

Game 2 – Davidson 9   Dayton  2
Davidson had an early advantage on the scoreboard, as the home team scored two runs in the bottom of the first. The Flyers responded when Alex Harris came up to bat in the top of the second inning and hit a solo home run to left field.

The Wildcats added two more runs in the third and fourth innings and three runs in the fifth inning to increase the lead to 9-1.

Dayton's A.J. Ryan batted first in the top of the sixth inning and hit a solo home run to right center. The Flyers weren't able to capitalize on this momentum however, as Davidson pitcher Ryan Lowe got the next three batters out.

Starter Bradley Horn (L, 1-4) pitched three innings, giving up four earned runs on five hits. He also struck out three batters. Nick Gobert and Ben Polansky also pitched in the game for the Flyers.

Polansky worked the final three innings without allowing a run. He struck out two batters and held the Wildcats to just three hits.

A.J. Ryan and Robbie Doring each had two hits for the Flyers. Mitch Coughlin entered in the ninth inning as a pinch hitter for the second straight game. Coughlin hit a single to right field to go 2-2 on the day (Coughlin also singled in the first game of the doubleheader).
