SOFTBALL WRAPS UP REGULAR SEASON AT LA SALLE

Flyers Looking To Break Program Record for Wins

DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton softball team completes its 2015 regular season with three games on the road in Philadelphia against the La Salle Explorers.  The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday with game one starting at noon, followed by a single game on Sunday, also starting at noon.  The Flyers have already clinched a spot in the 2015 Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament, and will be making their fourth appearence in the last five seasons.

Recent Action
The Flyers have a 34-12 record and are coming off a two game sweep in their final home games against Massachusetts, shutting out the Minutewoman 1-0 and 6-0.  UD has won six straight.
La Salle enters the game with a 13-17 record overall. The Explorers most recently played Saint Joseph's at home and lost both games played.

Series Stuff 
Dayton has a 29-14 all-time record against the Explorers.
UD went 2-1 against La Salle last season, defeating them 9-1 in the A-10 Tournament.

Scouting Report
As a team, the Explorers are hitting for a .251 average while allowing their opponents to a .286 mark. In the circle they have a team ERA of 3.34 and are led by Mary Cate Scott, who has a 2.00 ERA with team highs in wins (6), saves (3) and strikeouts (53).

Saturday: In Philadelphia it will be a sun and clouds mix, high of 74 degrees.
Sunday: Mostly sunny with a high of 81 degrees.

Just Win Baby
With the 8-0 victory over Rhode Island on March 28 head coach Cara LaPlaca reached the 20-win milestone for her sixth time at UD, and her fifth season in a row.  LaPlaca then broke her record for most wins in a season at UD which was 27, following the 6-1 win over Saint Joseph's on April 12.  Next up she broke the school record for conference wins on April 18 with the 4-1 victory over George Washington.  She is now looking to break the overall record for most wins in a season at 35 (2000).

Home Sweet Home
The Flyers went a perfect 14-0 at home this season, and are riding a 17-game home win streak dating back to last season.  Dayton had never finished a season undefeated at home in program history.

300 Club
With the 8-0 victory over the Fordham Rams on April 4, LaPlaca earned her 300th career victory.  It was her 169th at Dayton.  She earned 131 victories while head coach at her alma mater Clarke College.

Perfect English
Senior pitcher Kayla English threw the first perfect game in UD history on March 29 against Rhode Island.  She retired all 15 batters in a row in the 10-0 5-inning victory.  It was her second no-hitter in her career, she threw one against Wright State on March 27, 2014.  For her performance, she was awarded A-10 Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season.

Top Tossers
This season the UD pitching staff leads the Atlantic 10 in ERA with a 2.13 mark, which is good for 15th in the country. The staff is led by Kayla English who is second in the A-10 with a 1.53 ERA (22nd nationally). Manda Cash ranks first in the conference with a 1.46 ERA (17th nationally). English also ranks first in the conference in hits per seven innings (4.58, 22nd nationally), while Cash is tops in strikeouts per seven innings (9.4, 17th nationally) and in saves with seven (T-1st nationally)

Veterans Making Their Mark
Several Flyer seniors have made significant impacts on the Flyer record books in their careers:  
  • Kayla English holds the all-time career record in strikeouts with 555, ranks third in wins with 53, three away from the record, and third in innings pitched with 574.1.  She is also on the NCAA's active leader list for: appearances (30th), innings pitched (40th), victories (37th) and strikeouts (30th)
  • Tiffany Ricks ranks first in slugging percentage (.644), second in home runs (32) and RBI (118), third in batting average (.352), runs (98), and doubles (32), and fifth in steals (32).
  • Natalie Mariano is fourth in hits (178) and tied for third in runs scored (91).
  • Grad Student Jordan Jennings is fourth all-time in home runs (24) and is tied for sixth all-time in RBI (85).
  • This senior class is the winningest in program history with 105 victories and counting.

Cash Earns Fourth Rookie of the Week Award
Freshman pitcher Manda Cash earned her fourth Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honor for games played from April 20-26.  The southpaw went 2-0 with one save in Dayton's 3-0 week. She posted a 0.62 ERA with 11.1 innings pitched and 16 strikeouts. Cash shut it down for the Flyers in a 9-6 win over crosstown rival Wright State on Tuesday, April 21, earning her seventh save of the season, tying her for the NCAA lead. She went three and a third innings, tying her longest relief appearance of the season. She also holds the UD single season record for saves.
