DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team went off for season highs in hits and runs as the Flyers recorded a 22-10 victory over Fordham Friday.
The Flyers opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with an RBI single to right by senior
Sergio Plasencia. Fellow senior
Zach Schira followed up with a sacrifice fly to right, making it a 2-0 contest.
Fordham answered with a pair of runs in the fourth on four hits, tying the game up at 2-2.
The deadlock did not last long however as Dayton scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth, this time taking a 6-2 lead over the Rams.
Fordham got two runs back in the top of the fifth, closing the gap to two runs.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Flyers exploded for seven runs after batting through the line-up. That gave host Dayton a commanding 13-4 lead over the Rams going into the later stages of the contest.
The Flyers weren't done however and scored two more in the seventh and another seven-spot in the eighth. With such a large advantage, Dayton took game two of the series, 22-10.
In the contest, Dayton racked-up a season-high 22 runs on a season-high 25 hits. Plasencia drove in five runs while going 3-for-7 to lead the way while sophomore
Mitch Coughlin, senior
A.J. Ryan, and senior
Alex Harris all had 4-for-5 outings. Ryan drove in four runs as well, including his eighth home run of the season.
Starter
Noah Buettgen (W, 4-7) pitched seven strong innings, giving up four earned runs and striking out six batters. Juniors
Bradley Horn and
Sam Brunner closed out the game in the eighth and ninth frames.
It was the most runs for Dayton since scoring 25 runs in a win over Temple on April 2, 2010.
The Flyers (15-38, 4-19 A-10) will finish up the season on Saturday with a 12 p.m. start time. The Senior Day ceremony will take place prior to the game.
