DAYTON – University of Dayton men's basketball coach
Archie Miller has officially announced that Nahziah Carter (pronounced Nah-Zee-ah), a 6-foot-6, 190-pound forward from Rochester, N.Y., has signed a letter of intent with the University of Dayton.
Carter attends Bishop Kearney High School. Coach Kevin Goode's program is considered one of the best in upstate New York and is well-regarded for producing Division I players.
An exciting athlete with great leaping ability, Carter had three factors that contributed to a meteoric rise in recruiting circles this summer. He grew approximately two inches, worked tirelessly on his outside shot, and was very productive on the court.
Playing for the Albany City Rocks in the NIKE Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) as a 16-year-old in a league that included 18-year-olds, Carter averaged 10.7 points a game while shooting .592 (61-103) FG, and .464 (13-28) from three-point range.
At the New York Summer Hoops Festival, he led his Rochester team to the tournament championship and also won the slam dunk contest.
As a junior for Bishop Kearney, he averaged 15.1 points a game.
"We are really excited to add Nahziah to our recruiting class," Miller said. "We evaluated him during most of July, and even though there was a chance he would reclassify his recruiting because of his young age in relation to others in his class. We offered him in hopes he would be willing to come to us as a 2017 recruit.
"You have to like everything about him, academically and athletically. We feel that we have a great platform for him to improve on the court and off. He has tremendous upside. He is extremely athletic, has good size and is an excellent shooter. He is a gifted scorer."
Off the court, he is the nephew of entertainer and entrepreneur Shawn Carter, who is better known as Jay-Z.
Carter is the fourth member of UD's Class of 2021. He joins guard Jordan Davis, forward/center Jordan Pierce and point guard McKinley Wright.
The Flyers host 17th-ranked Saint Mary's Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.
