DAYTON, Ohio - Newly appointed head coach,
Shauna Green, is looking at her first season back with the Flyers after spending last season as an assistant coach at Northwestern. Green previously worked as an assistant with the Flyers from 2012-2015. The Flyers saw incredible success during Green's first run at Dayton, including 28 wins in 2014-2015.
Dayton will open the campaign this Sunday at 2 p.m. in an exhibition against Grand Valley State. It will be free admission for all fans with schedule posters, cards, and magnets being given out. In the Atlantic 10 Preseason poll released recently, the Flyers were picked to finish in a tie for second-place with Duquesne. With 166 points, Dayton trailed only A-10 favorites Saint Louis. Individually, junior
Jenna Burdette was picked Preseason First Team All-Atlantic 10 while senior
Kelley Austria was named Second Team All-A-10 and senior
Saicha Grant-Allen was picked Third Team All-A-10. Austria also picked up All-Defensive Team accolades.
Burdette was the leading scorer for the Flyers last season. She started and played all 29 games. She led the team with 333 total points, averaging 11.5 per game bringing her to 532 total career points. Burdette also led the team with 140 total assists, averaging 4.8 per game. Burdette was a Third Team All-Atlantic 10 performer.
Grant-Allen is another Flyer to watch this season after being the only other player to play and start all 29 games last season. She led the Flyers in rebounds with 259 last season, averaging 8.9 per game. Allen also contributed 33 blocks, 14 steals and a career-high 322 total points.
Austria is set to return after being medically redshirted last season. The senior guard played and started all 35 games for the Flyers during the 2014-2015 season. She was named A-10 All-Defensive Team and A-10 All-Championship Team her junior season. Austria currently has 806 total career points and contributed 73 total points before being redshirted last season. She played and started all seven games that she appeared in last year.
Sophomore guard
Lauren Cannatelli is coming off an impressive freshmen year, earning A-10 Rookie of the Year honors. She played in 29 games, starting in 21 of them. She led the team with 63 three-pointers, scoring 10.4 points per game. Once conference play started, Cannatelli led the team in scoring with 13.3 points per game.
The Flyers will face a tough schedule in the 2016-17 season. They play five non-conference games against power five schools, including on the road at Connecticut who has won 75 straight games. Dayton will take on six teams from last year's tournament field this season, and are scheduled to attend three non-conference events: the Junkanoo Jam in the Bahamas, the Florida Sunshine Classic in Orlando, and the Cavalier Classic in Virginia.
The conference schedule for the Flyers will also be tougher this year. Dayton plays the top three conference schools from last year twice, George Washington, Duquesne, and Saint Louis. Green helped guide the Flyers to a 14-2 conference record in her last season at Dayton back in 2014-15, and will attempt to improve on last year's 7-9 conference mark.
The current seniors have had a record of 66-29 during their time at Dayton. They have won the A-10 regular season championship twice. The senior class has also had two trips to the NCAA Tournament during there time at Dayton, including advancing to the Elite Eight their sophomore year before being stopped by eventual National Champions Connecticut. With only seven total home losses over the past three years, the seniors will look to protect their home court again this year.
