Cooke Named To The First Team, Pierre To The Second Team

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - University of Dayton men's basketball players Charles Cooke and Dyshawn Pierre were named All-Atlantic 10 when the conference announced its 2016 award winners.

Cooke was selected First Team All-Atlantic 10, and Pierre earned Second Team All A-10 honors for the second straight season.

Cooke was also named to the All-Defensive Team. He is the first Flyer named to the A-10 All-Defensive Team since London Warren in 2010.

Cooke leads UD in scoring (15.8), 3-pt. shooting (.411, 53-129) and steals (35) and is second in rebounding (6.0) and blocked shots (34). The transfer from James Madison has scored 20 or more points 12 times this season.

The Trenton, N.J. native was named UD's team Co-MVP (with Pierre), and was also named the winner of the Best Defender Award.

Cooke is the seventh Flyer to be named First Team All-Atlantic 10. The others are Ryan Perryman (1998), Mark Ashman (2000), Keith Waleskowski (2004), Brian Roberts (2008), Chris Wright (2010) and Jordan Sibert (2015).

The Flyers joined the A-10 in 1995-96.

Pierre, the first four-year player for coach Archie Miller, is second on the team in scoring (12.6 points per game). He leads UD this season on the boards (8.5 rebounds a game), in minutes played (33.5) and FT% (.845 (60-71).

Also the first Canadian to play men's basketball at Dayton, the Whitby, Ont. native is 25th in career scoring (1,385 points) and 14th in career rebounding (813). In the final month of the season (7 games) he has averaged a double-double (11.7 points and 10.7 rebounds).

UD finished the regular season co-champions in the Atlantic 10, with a 14-4 conference record. Dayton enters the post season 24-6 overall, with the 21st-best RPI ranking in the country.

The Flyers earned the No. 1 seed in this week's A-10 tournament. Dayton will meet either Fordham or Richmond on Friday at 12 noon ET in the quarterfinals of the A-10 tournament, which will be played in Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
