#UDWBB HOLDS ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET

The Flyers Reflected Back On The 2016-17 Season

DAYTON – The University of Dayton women's basketball team held its annual end-of-the-year awards banquet on Thursday evening at Top of the Market in Dayton.

Student-athletes, coaches, administrators, families, and fans were on hand as the program reflected on the success of the team and individuals this past season.

Here are the individual awards that were given out:

ACADEMIC AWARD WINNER – Lauren Cannatelli
Cannatelli played in all 32 games this year with seven starts. She averaged 7.3 points per game in her sophomore campaign and led the team in three-pointers made with 51. She tied the record for threes in a game with seven against Davidson on Feb. 1. Cannatelli managed to do all of this while being named to the Fall 2016 Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and majoring in exercise physiology.

MOST IMPROVED PLAYER – JaVonna Layfield
Layfield played and started in every game this season, significantly increasing her role after just three starts in 2015-16. She nearly doubled her scoring from a year ago, going from 4.8 points per game to 8.3. The biggest improvement came on the glass, where Layfield recorded 242 rebounds this season. She also made improvements in blocks, field goal percentage, and three-point percentage. Layfield will be a senior next fall.

COACHES AWARD – Ashleigh Parkinson
Parkinson played in 15 games this past season, and served as a vocal and emotional leader on the squad. She was supportive of her teammates on the court and a positive locker room presence throughout the year. Her energy was contagious and she truly made the team feel like a family. Parkinson will be a junior next season.

FLYER OF THE YEAR AWARD – Jenna Burdette
Burdette finished the year as the team's second leading scorer with 12 points per game. She also led the team in total assists with 127 on the season, despite missing five games due to injury. Burdette was named Atlantic 10 Second Team All-Conference and the A-10 Tournament Most Outstanding Performer as well as All-Tournament Team. That came after earning Preseason First Team All-Conference honors and Florida Sunshine Classic All-Tournament Team. Burdette will be a senior next year.

WHITE ALLEN MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AWARD – Kelley Austria and Saicha Grant-Allen
Austria led the Flyers in scoring this year with 12.2 points each game, while starting in all 32 games. Austria also led the team in steals (54), free throws made (88), and minutes (1011). She earned Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year honors, All-Defensive Team, and Second Team All-Conference. Austria scored her 1000th career point during the season, becoming only the 24th Flyer to reach that mark. She finishes her career 18th all-time in scoring, 13th in made free throws, fourth in free throw percentage, seventh in career three pointers made, third in three point percentage, and second in career steals.

Grant-Allen capped off a phenomenal career with the Flyers by getting drafted by the Los Angeles Sparks in the third round of the 2017 WNBA Draft. She was third on the Flyers in scoring with 9.9 points per game and led Dayton in rebounds with 275 on the season. Grant-Allen recorded 117 offensive rebounds and became the all-time leader in UD history with 290. She was named Second Team All-Conference, and All-Defensive team. Grant-Allen now ranks ninth all-time in career rebounds, 14th in rebounding average, 16th in field goal percentage, 10th in free throws attempted, seventh in blocked shots, and 12th in games played.
