BRONX, N.Y. – Dayton baseball dropped a 3-1 contest to Fordham on Sunday in the weekend series finale. The loss drops the Flyers record to 14-29 (6-12 A-10) this season, while Fordham improves to 30-15-1 (12-6 A-10) on the year. Dayton is now 4.0 games back from the seventh spot in the A-10 standings, which is the threshold to qualify for the Atlantic 10 postseason tournament.
KEY MOMENT
After falling behind in an early 3-0 hole by the end of the second inning, Dayton was the benefactor of stellar pitching from RJ Wagner in relief, as the sophomore from Zionsville, Ind. threw six innings of scoreless relief to keep the Flyers in the game. With the score sitting at 3-1 in the top of the ninth,
Takahiro Yamada ripped a one-out single through the ride side to bring
Mitchell Garrity to the plate representing the game-tying run, but Garrity flied out to left field and
Connor Echols struck out to end the game before Dayton was able to seriously threaten.
SCORING SUMMARY
Bottom 1st: (Fordham 2, Dayton 0)
Fordham got its first two batters aboard via a hit batsman and walk, then Alvin Melendez hit a single to left field to drive home the leadoff man. The runner on second advanced to third on a fly ball to right field and scored on a safety squeeze the next at-bat.
Bottom 3rd: (Fordham 3, Dayton 0)
A single and a walk gave Fordham a pair of baserunner and a double steal moved a Rams runner up to third, who would go on to score on a high-chopping ground ball to second.
Top 4th: (Fordham 3, Dayton 1)
The Flyers got back the run they yielded in the bottom of the third off a string of two-out hits.
Riley Tirotta provided the first of three consecutive base knocks with a hard-hit ball into right center and was followed by
Michael Cleary, whose single down the right field line allowed Tirotta to advance to third.
Bailey Montoya ripped a ball through the left side to send Tirotta across the plate and put Dayton on the board.
