Women's Soccer Opens 2018 Season At JMU Invitational

The Flyers Face James Madison And William & Mary In The Tournament

DAYTON – The University of Dayton women's soccer team (0-0-0, 0-0-0 A-10) opens up the 2018 season at the Fairfield Inn by Marriott JMU Invitational. The Flyers take on the host Dukes on Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. at Sentara Park in Harrisonburg, Va. UD will play William and Mary on Sunday, Aug. 19 at 11:30 a.m. at Sentara Park, which features a natural grass surface and opened in 2012. 

THE SERIES
• Dayton is 0-2-0 all-time vs. James Madison. The last time these two teams met was Oct. 22, 1994 when the Dukes won 3-1. The Flyers also hosted James Madison on Sept. 12, 1993 and fell 3-2. 
• The Flyers have faced William & Mary just once in their history. The result was a 1-1 double overtime tie on Sept. 9, 2005 at a neutral site at the University of Virginia Nike Soccer Classic.

FLYER QUICK HITS
•    Dayton finished the 2017 season with a 9-9-2 overall record and 4-4-2 Atlantic 10 Conference record.
•    Junior Micayla Livingston is UD's top returning scorer after notching seven goals and five assists last year.
•    Senior defender Nadia Pestell led the Flyers with six assists last season.
•    Senior goalkeeper Kaelyn Johns has started 61 matches in her career and has 261 career saves. Her 15 career shutouts are fourth all-time at UD, including a career-high seven shutouts last season.
• UD has 11 freshmen on its roster this season. 
• Head coach Eric Golz is in his second season at the helm of the Flyers. He previously served as an assistant at UD in 2011. 

HOME SWEET HOME
•    Dayton has 10 home matches on its home Baujan Field this season. 
•    Baujan Field will be the site of the 2018 Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship semifinals on Nov. 2 and the final on Nov. 4.

SCOUTING JAMES MADISON
• JMU finished 9-10-0 overall and 4-5-0 in the CAA in 2017.
• Entering its first season under head coach Joshua Walters, Sr., the James Madison women's soccer team was picked to finish third in the 2018 Colonial Athletic Association Preseason Poll.
•  Junior forward Haley Crawford was named to the Preseason All-CAA Team. She had seven goals and seven assists in 2017, leading JMU in both.
• Redshirt junior Olivia Milleraw action in 15 matches in goal for JMU last year. She had a 1.47 GAA and made 40 saves.  

SCOUTING WILLIAM & MARY
• The Tribe went 8-10-2 overall and 3-4-2 in the CAA last season. 
• William & Mary was picked to finish fifth in the 2018 Colonial Athletic Association preseason poll.
• Redshirt junior forward Sarah Segan was selected to the 2018 Preseason All-CAA team. Last season, Segan led the Tribe with eight goals, two assists, and 20 points.
• Former three-time All-American Julie Shackford '88 begins her first season as head coach of the Tribe. A 25-year coaching veteran and former national coach of the year, Shackford owns a 245-130-33 record (.641).

FLYERS PICKED 7TH IN A-10 POLL
• The Dayton women's soccer team was selected  to finish seventh in the 2018 Atlantic 10 standings in a vote by the league's 14 head coaches. 

DAYTON'S A-10 BACKGROUND 
• Dayton has won the A-10 Tournament Championship more than any other team in the conference: 10 times (1996, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2016). 
• UD has also won or shared 11 Atlantic 10 Regular Season titles (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2013). The next closest is Massachusetts with five. 
• Dayton has appeared in 21 A-10 tournaments, earning a berth every year the Flyers have been a member of the conference. 

BELIEVIN' IN BAUJAN 
• The Flyers are 224-66-22 all-time in games played n their home field, Baujan Field. In the last six years, Dayton is 68-14-7 at home, an astounding .803 winning percentage at Baujan. 

CINCINNATI CONNECTIONS
•  10 Flyers are from the Cincinnati area: senior Sara Robertson, juniors Hanna Merritt, Caroline Mink, Madeleine Morrissey, Alex Powell, sophomores Olivia Brown and Megan Rack, and freshmen Sam Hausser, Lexy Kidd, and Mimi Stines.

#UDWSOC - NCAA REGULARS 
• The Flyers have made 10 NCAA Tournament appearances in program history: 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014, and 2016. UD advanced to the second round in both 2009 and 2010 and to the Sweet Sixteen in 2001. The Flyers lost 3-2 to No. 24 Ohio State in the NCAA First Round in Columbus in 2016.

FANTASTIC FRESHMEN 
• Dayton's freshmen have a history of making an impact. 
• Until last season, the Flyers have had at least one representative on the A-10 All-Rookie team every year since it started in 2000.
Micayla Livingston and Caroline Mink were both named to the 2016 A-10 All-Rookie Team. 
Beth Kamphaus was named to the All-Rookie team in 2015 after coming on strong in conference play.
Kaelyn Johns started every match in goal for the Flyers in 2015. 
Nadia Pestell started 19 matches for the Flyers on defense and logged 1,474 minutes in 2015. She played for the U-17 Canadian National Team and won a silver medal at the CONCACAF Women's U17 Championships in Jamaica.
