Steven Karl Clinches Dayton's 4-3 Win Over Butler

Karl Won His Match By A Score Of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 To Break A 3-3 Tie And Give The Flyers The Win

Box Score Indianapolis, Ind. - The University of Dayton men's tennis team traveled to Indianapolis to take on Butler on Friday afternoon and the Flyers left with an impressive road win over the host Bulldogs. The Flyers improve their overall record to 3-2, while Butler drops to 4-4 on the season.

With the match tied at 3-3, Steven Karl clinched the match with a dramatic three-set win at No. 6 singles. Karl and his opponent Spencer Lang split the first two sets, both at scores of 6-3 to head into the decisive third set. The third set was gridlocked at 3-3, but Karl would go on to win each of the next three points to clinch the match and the team win. Look below for Karl's match-clinching point.



In the events leading up to Karl's match-clinching point, Dayton started off strong by earning the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Play on court two was halted once the Flyers had locked up the point.

In singles play, Butler tied it back up at 1-1 with a straight sets win at No. 4 by Thomas Brennan over Lorenzo Rollhauser, but Langford Hills provided the answer for Dayton with a 6-3, 4-3 (ret.) win at the No. 2 spot in the lineup over Michael Dickson to take back the lead. The win moved Hills to a perfect 5-0 on the season in dual match play.

The Bulldogs fought back to take the lead once again with two straight wins on courts one and five. Mason Dragos downed Jordan Benjamin at the top spot with a score of 6-4, 7-6 (4), while Ryan Roegner bested Joe DeMarco at No. 5 by a 6-1, 6-4 line.

Junior Spencer Richey found himself in a pivotal, three-set match for the second straight week and with the match on the line, Richey delivered. Richey's 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 win over Aviv Ben Shabat kept Dayton alive in the match and set up for Karl's heroics on court No. 6. 

Up next for Dayton is a pair of home matches next week. The Flyers host Bryant on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. before welcoming in conference foe Richmond to town for a matchup on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. (ET).
