DAYTON – The University of Dayton football team has officially announced additions to its coaching staff for the 2019 season.  Three of the coaches have previous Dayton football experience (four if you count having played against UD as a college player).
The new coaches are
Tee Overman (defensive coordinator),
Brian Steiner (special teams coordinator/defensive ends),
James Daniels (Flyers),
Christian Bryan (receivers) and
Scott Horcher (cornerbacks).
Overman and Steiner previously coached at Dayton, while Horcher was a four-year starter at corner for the Flyers.
After coaching the Flyer linebackers in 2016, Overman went to Washington State for two seasons. Â He was the Cougars' quality control assistant for special teams and defense. Â In 2018, WSU had a school-record 11 wins and played in the Alamo Bowl.
Steiner was previously UD's defensive line coach from 2006 to 2008. Â Dayton won the Division I-AA Mid-Major (non-scholarship) national championship in 2007, and the Flyer defense was ranked top five nationally in three categories. Â Steiner's 10 seasons in between coaching at UD were all spent at Clarion University, where he coached the Golden Eagles' defensive line for all 10 years. Â Â
Daniels played collegiately at Mount Union, where he was on teams that reached the Stagg Bowl four times, including winning the NCAA Division III national championship in 2008. Â Last season, he was the defensive backs graduate assistant at Buffalo, and was part of the winningest football season in Bulls' history.
Bryan played receiver four seasons at Youngstown State. Â One of the Pengiuns' top pass catchers ever, Bryan played against Dayton as a junior. Â He has coached receivers at all four of his coaching stops. Â Bryan has spent the last two seasons at Indiana of Pennsylvania.
Horcher returns to the Dayton football program for his first college coaching position. Â A high school teacher, he has coached on the football staffs at Dayton area high schools since his graduation from UD in 2010, most recently at Springboro. Â He played on teams that were a combined 33-12, won two Pioneer Football League championships, and in 2007, won the NCAA Division I-AA Mid-Major (non-scholarship) national championship.
Dayton was 6-5 a year ago, and 5-3 in the Pioneer Football league.  Three of UD's five losses in 2018 were to teams that reached the FCS playoffs.  Dayton returns 13 starters – seven from the offense, and six from the defensive side of the ball.  All-PFL performers
Andrew Lutgens (Flyer) and
Adam Trautman (tight end) are UD's 2019 co-captains.Â
The Flyers open the season at Indiana State on Saturday, Sept. 7.
