Casey Bogues Finishes 11th In Javelin At NCAA Championships

She Broke Her Own UD Record With A Personal Best On Her First Throw

EUGENE, Ore. – University of Dayton track and field standout Casey Bogues finished 11th in the javelin throw at the NCAA Championships tonight at the historic Hayward Field on the campus of University of Oregon. She finishes her rookie season as a Second Team All-American.

Bogues threw a personal best 53.39m on her first throw, once again breaking her own record, this time by more than two meters.

"When we stepped on Hayward Field, you could feel the energy from the crowd. Casey's level of focus was nothing short of intense. Casey and I knew it was going to take something big to make finals because of how deep the field was this year," said UD throws coach Kevin Gilhuly. "During warmups she made every throw look easy and the smile on Coach (Jason) Ordway's face grew bigger and bigger as the warm ups concluded because we knew she had a big throw coming.

"On that first throw Casey unleashed her big throw and we couldn't be more proud of her in her first season," he added. "She felt the support of all her family, friends, teammates, and Flyer Nation all the way in Eugene. It's the perfect combination for an athlete to succeed and Casey really stepped up today. I couldn't be more proud of her."

She competed amongst the 24 top javelin throwers in NCAA Division I this year, just missing the cut for the final in which the top 9 advanced. Senior Marie-Therese Obst was crowned the javelin national champion with a mark of 59.69m.

Bogues became just the third Flyer to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships; she joins the elite group of Emily Borchers (2019 in SteepleChase) and Mallory Barnes (2010 and 2011 in Hammer Throw).

Bogues qualified for the NCAA Championships NCAA East preliminary round in Jacksonville, Fla. on May 27. Bogues placed ninth of 48 competitors with a mark of 50.96m, which she threw on her first attempt. The top 12 individuals from that region earned a spot at the NCAA Championships.

In her first collegiate outdoor season, Bogues won the javelin event at six meets this year, including the 2021 Atlantic 10 Championship with a then school-record and conference-record mark of 51.28m.
