DAYTON – The University of Dayton women's tennis team will play at home for the first time in 2022 this weekend, hosting a pair of matches on Saturday and Sunday against Cleveland State and Cincinnati. The Flyers will take on Cleveland State at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday before returning Sunday morning to host Cincinnati at 10 a.m. at South Regency Tennis Center in Miamisburg.
Â
"We are looking forward to our home matches this weekend," head coach
Erica Echko said. "I felt we competed well against Xavier after only four practices. We had a strong week of practice, and we are ready to go. Cleveland State and Cincinnati are always tough opponents and we hope to get off to a good start in doubles play. It would be great to get more fans out to our home matches this season, after having to limit fans to just parents last year."
Â
These will mark the first two of 12 home matches for the Flyers in 2022. All five of UD's wins last season came in Dayton, and the Flyers will look to continue to have success at home.
Â
Dayton enters the match with a 2-1 record after dropping the first match of the spring last Saturday at Xavier 5-2 at Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club in Cincinnati.
Â
Junior
Paige Kompa grabbed her first victory of the spring season in No. 4 singles over Xavier's Blessing Nwaozuzu, joining senior
Claire Ghidotti, who also won her draw against Natalie Moyer in straight sets, to give the Flyers two points. The two joined juniors
Erica Wojcikiewicz and
Elizabeth Hamilton and freshmen
Neena Katauskas and
Laura Greb as the six for the Flyers in singles play.
Â
Cleveland State will play for the first time in 2022 on Saturday and are highlighted by sophomore Bethany Yauch, who won nine matches as a freshman and tied for the team lead with seven wins in singles play this past fall. She tied freshman Tereze Vevere, who is one of four freshmen the Vikings will feature this season.
Â
The Vikings have won the previous two matches over the Flyers with the last win against Cleveland State coming in 2018 in Dayton.
Â
Cincinnati currently sits at 0-2 after falling to Purdue last weekend and Louisville on Friday morning. Maria Santilli is 2-0 in No. 4 singles this season, winning both matches in straight sets this season. Santilli finished third on the team in wins last season, with Emma Miceli finishing at 8-4 in 2021 to lead the Bearcats. Miceli and Ioana Guna, who played every match at No. 1 singles last year, also both return for UC.
Â
The Flyers last beat the Bearcats in 2015, with Cincinnati having won the last six matches between the two opponents.
