OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The University of Dayton women's rowing team competed Friday and Saturday at the 2022 SIRA Championships.
The Flyers participated in multiple events and had teams advance to the finals with three races for each boat on the weekend. Every boat improved between races in great weather conditions at Melton Lake.
"Overall it was a good weekend of racing," said head coach Mike Wenker. "This race is an opportunity to go down the course three times with good competition. Novice 8+ made the big final and had three good races. Varsity 4+ got a fast time and they were in the small final. They had a rough start and recovered to fight themselves back, then sprinted ahead for the win. They got better every time out. It was really nice to see a boat learn each race. The 2V8+ was racing against the fastest crews. They had a cross wind, were getting aligned and they weren't prepared when the race started off, but it made them go faster in the end. They put together a good race after a tough start. V8+ had a good time trial, semifinal, and then in the final came off the line well. They fell a little behind, then were able to fight back to get fourth. This was probably the fastest field we have seen in a long time. Overall, I think we were pretty excited on how the weekend went. It was great to see the parents and the alumni. It was how we hoped to represent the University."
Dayton returns to action on Sunday, April 24 against George Mason at the Occoquan Reservoir in Fairfax, Va.
