ARLINGTON, Va. – The University of Dayton baseball team came from behind to win to beat George Washington 5-3 at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Va. Junior
Ben Jones picked up another go-ahead base hit, driving home two of his three RBIs with a two-run double in the top of the eighth inning to give the Flyers the lead.
Freshman
Matt Maloney added three hits and scored a pair of runs, and graduate student
Henry Strmecki picked up his fifth multi-hit game of the season, driving in the tying run in the seventh with a base hit up the middle.
The Flyers improve to 12-14 on the year and 2-3 in A-10 play. George Washington falls to 16-15 and picked up their first conference loss of the season, now sitting at 4-1.
ON THE MOUND
Junior
Mark Manfredi started the game for the Flyers and had the longest start by a Dayton pitcher this season. The lefty went 6.2 innings, giving up three runs on a pair of home runs, but held the Colonials to just three other hits and struck out four.
Graduate student
Nick Meyer entered the game finished the seventh for the Flyers, not allowing a run in his two-thirds of an inning. Sophomore
Eli Majick entered for Meyer with one out in the eighth and picked up his third win of the season to lead the Flyers. Majick pitched one inning without allowing a hit and got the first out in the ninth inning.
Graduate student
Andrew Zapka recorded his second save of the season, pitching the last two-thirds of an inning, shutting down the Colonials and securing Dayton's second A-10 win of the season.
SCORING PLAYS
Bottom 3: (2-0 Colonials)
Manfredi retired the first two George Washington batters of the inning before a two-out walk and a home run put the Flyers down 2-0.
Bottom 5: (3-0 Colonials)
The first two Colonials again were retired by Manfredi in the fifth, but a second home run of the game for George Washington extended the deficit to three.
Top 7: (3-3 Tie)
Maloney picked up one of his three hits on the afternoon to lead off the seventh inning. Junior
Omar Daniels doubled to put two in scoring position before Jones drove in his first run of the game with a groundout to short, scoring Maloney from third. Senior
Jay Curtis brought sophomore
Anthony Steinhardt, who pinch ran for Daniels, home with a base hit of his own to cut the lead to 3-2. Curtis would steal second and Strmecki tied the game with a double of his own.
Top 8: (5-3 Flyers)
Junior
Keagan Calero drew a leadoff walk and senior
Jake Silverstein advanced him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Maloney again picked up a base hit through the left side to put runners on the corner and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Two batters later Jones doubled past the third baseman down the left field line, bringing home Calero and Maloney to give Dayton a 5-3 lead they would keep, securing the win on Saturday.
