Women’s Basketball’s Rally Comes Up Short At Saint Louis

The Flyers Made It One Possession Game With Under A Minute To Play

ST. LOUIS – The University of Dayton women's basketball team rallied from a 19-point deficit to make it a two-point game in the fourth, but fell to Saint Louis University Friday, 74-70.

The Flyers (7-9, 1-4 A-10) had a valiant effort, but the Billikens (7-11, 2-3 A-10) held on for their second Atlantic 10 victory.

KEY MOMENT
2nd quarter – 7:36 – Saint Louis finished a 14-0 run to pull ahead by 17 over Dayton and led the rest of the way.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 12, Saint Louis 19
  • The hosts jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the opening two minutes, all off turnovers which the Flyers had five of.
  • Junior Ivy Wolf ended the drought at the 6:47 mark with a corner three to put UD on the board.
  • At the first media timeout, Dayton tied the game up at 8-8 after a jumper from redshirt senior Destiny Bohanon.
  • SLU responded and took a five-point lead, 13-8.
  • The Billikens were able to get the margin to seven by the end of the corner, 19-12.
  • The Flyers committed 10 turnovers in the opening quarter alone.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 27, Saint Louis 43
  • The Flyers were forced to call a timeout at the 9:14 mark after a 4-0 run by the Billikens to start the second with UD trailing by double digits, 23-12.
  • Wolf stopped the run with a pull-up jumper with 7:28 to play in the quarter.
  • SLU was able to extend its lead to 17 as Dayton looked to get things going offensively halfway through the second.
  • The Flyers stepped up defensively and held the Billikens without a field goal for four minutes of the quarter while going 3-for-3 during that stretch.
  • Dayton shot 38 percent in the first half while Saint Louis shot 54 percent.
  • Wolf led the way with nine points while Bohanon had eight points and junior Arianna Smith had four points and six boards.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 44, Saint Louis 55
  • UD got a couple of early defensive stops to get some early momentum in the second half.
  • Neither team was able to convert a field goal until a layup from graduate student Mariah Perez with 7:49 on the clock. She head the first two baskets for the Flyers in the second half.
  • By the media break, Dayton faced a 48-34 deficit.
  • The Flyers narrowed the margin from 19 down to 10 at 48-38 with 3:45 to go in the third.
  • Wolf hit a jumper at the free throw line to make it a single digit game with under three to play.
  • UD outscored SLU 17-12 in the third.
4th Quarter: Dayton 70, Saint Louis 74
  • Back-to-back threes from Bohanon and Wolf made it a seven-point game with just over eight minutes to go in the contest.
  • At the midway point in the fourth, the Flyers battled their way back to trail by just 10, 67-57.
  • Wolf and Bohanon joined Smith with double-digit points on the night.
  • Junior Shannon Wheeler got a putback with :45 to make it a 72-65 contest.
  • Jones hit a pair of clutch free throws with :20 left to cut the margin to five at 72-67.
  • Freshman Riley Rismiller hit a big three with :17 to go to make it a two-point game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
8thArianna Smith recorded her eighth double-double of the season and third straight with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
19 – Dayton trailed by as much as 19 points, but were able to claw their way back to a two-point margin.
16 – Ivy Wolf finished with 16 points in the contest.
14 – Destiny Bohanon added 14 points including four threes and had four assists.
53% - SLU shot 53 percent in the win while UD shot 46 percent.  

KEY STAT
24 – The Flyers committed 24 turnovers compared to 15 for the Billikens.
