Women’s Basketball Falls To No. 16/16 Duke

The Flyers Faced The Nationally Ranked Blue Devils In First Road Test

DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Dayton women's basketball team went on the road for the first time this season to play No. 16/16 Duke University and suffered its first loss of the year.

The Flyers (2-1) were just unable to match the firepower of the Blue Devils (3-1) who get back on the winning path.  

KEY MOMENT
1st – 6:10 – Dayton jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, but Duke answered with a 9-0 run of their own and rode that momentum the rest of the way.
 
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 10, Duke 17
  • The Flyers won the tip and with the shot clock winding down, graduate student Rikki Harris hit a runner off the glass to give UD the initial lead. She followed that up with a big three to make it a 5-0 visitor advantage.
  • A three by senior Ivy Wolf put the Flyers up 8-0 before a three by the Blue Devils at the 6:10 mark ended their drought.
  • Duke answered with a 9-0 run of their own to take the lead back with under 4:00 to play in the quarter.
  • The hosts continued to add to their lead and pulled ahead by five, 15-10, with just over a minute to go in the quarter.
  • Dayton committed nine turnovers in the first 10 minutes while Duke had four.
  • Harris was UD's leading scorer with five points.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 23, Duke 37
  • Duke got the margin to double digits by the 7:59 mark with a three pointer.
  • At the midway point in the second quarter, the Flyers trailed 26-16.
  • Dayton went to the bench early as 10 players had seen action with just under five minutes left in the half.
  • Out of the break, the Blue Devils increased the gap to 30-16 with less than two minutes to go.
  • Sophomore Ajok Madol scored on the face break off the assist from freshman Olivia Leung to end a four-minute drought.
  • Duke outscored Dayton 25-6 in the first half on bench points.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 37, Duke 62
  • The Flyers and Blue Devils came out battling in the early stages of the second half with neither team willing to give up an easy basket.
  • With just over six minutes on the clock, Duke had managed to make it a 2-0-point game off an 8-0 run.
  • Dayton called a timeout with 5:23 on the clock and faced a 49-26 deficit amidst a 10-0 run over a 2:53 stretch.
  • The Flyers broke the scoring skid with a three by Madol at the 4:11 mark.
  • The Blue Devils continued their offensive attack and pushed the margin to 28 at 60-32.
  • Duke outscored Dayton 25-14 in the quarter.
4th Quarter: Dayton 49, Duke 84
  • In the opening minute, Wolf saved the ball from going out-of-bounds right to junior Nayo Lear, who scored the first basket of the quarter.
  • Duke extended its lead to 30 at 72-42 halfway through the quarter as the game was getting out of reach for Dayton.
  • In the end, the Flyers just didn't have enough fire power to catch the 16th-ranked Blue Devils.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
14 and 7 – Ivy Wolf recorded team highs of 14 points on 4-of-8 three-point shooting and had seven rebounds.
24 – The Flyers had 24 turnovers resulting in 32 points for the Blue Devils.
12 – Ajok Madol scored a career-high 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting and was perfect from the free throw line and behind the arc.
5 – Nicole Stephens recorded a career-high five steals.
 
KEY STATS
58 – The Duke bench outscored the entire Dayton team with 58 points.

The Flyers return home to host Tennessee State Sunday, Nov. 17 at 1 p.m. at UD Arena.
