AUSTIN, Texas – The 2024 Academic All-America men's soccer teams were announced for by the College Sports Communicators Tuesday.
University of Dayton graduate student
Hjalti Sigurdsson received First Team All-America honors for Division I for his accomplishments on the pitch and in the classroom.
"This award signifies greatness both on the field and off the field," said head coach
Dennis Currier. "Hjalti leaves an amazing legacy at the Dayton Soccer program and is one of the most important student-athletes to come through UD. He has played a significant role In winning back-to-back A-10 Championships, No. 5 overall regular season ranking, a win over the No. 1 team in the country and a Third round appearance in the NCAA National Tournament. Individually, he led the country in points for a defender. In the classroom, he has achieved over a 3.7 GPA pursuing his Master's degree.  On behalf of the coaching staff, it has been an honor coaching such a tremendous student-athlete and this award is well deserved."
Sigurdsson earned Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year honors this season as well as First Team All-Conference, All-Academic Team, and Academic All-Region. The Icelandic centerback finished the year with eight goals and seven assists, both second on the team and Top 5 in the A-10. Sigurdsson finishes up a stellar two-year career at UD with 40 starts in 40 games, 13 goals, and nine assists. Having already earned his bachelor's degree, Sigurdsson is completing his Masters in Engineering Management.
He is the first Flyer to earn Scholar All-America honors since Xavier Zengue in 2022.
