DAYTON – After 18 seasons with the University of Dayton men's golf program, head coach
Gip Hoagland will retire following the 2025-26 season.
"I am stepping away from the University of Dayton golf program after 18 amazing years, with a heart full of gratitude for this incredible University," Hoagland said. "The privilege of coaching so many extraordinary young men over the past nearly two decades has been a true gift. They have touched many lives in countless ways, and the memories created will be cherished forever. Every second spent here has been loved, and love remains for every player that has come through this program.
"With that said, it is now time to focus on what means the most: family. My wife, Lori, daughters, Chelsea and Emily, and their families have been incredibly supportive and have been the ultimate Dayton Flyer family; cheering the guys on week in and week out, year after year," he added. "The opportunity to spend more quality time with my four grandchildren is extremely exciting."
A Dayton alum '93 and Class A PGA Professional who serves as head golf professional at NCR Country Club, Hoagland has been instrumental in elevating the Flyers into one of the top programs in the Atlantic 10 and the region.
Under his leadership, Dayton achieved top performances in the A-10 Championship, including
Ben Cors winning medalist honors in 2025 and advancing to the NCAA Regional. The Flyers took A-10 Championship runners-up honors in 2018 and 2021, the latter highlighted by Henry May's individual title and NCAA Regional appearance.
Known for developing student-athletes, holistically, Hoagland recruited top talent that excelled athletically, academically, and in the community.
"
Gip Hoagland, without a doubt, has poured his heart and soul into this program and left it better. What he has done for this program during his time here has been transformational. His dedication, professionalism, and care for UD and his student-athletes is second to none," said
Neil Sullivan, UD Vice President/Director of Athletics. "His efforts to help create the world-class Player Development Center at NCR Country Club's Performance Center was a program-changer. But more important than that, Gip has left his legacy as a coach who builds not only great golfers, but great men."
Under Hoagland, the Flyers consistently produced All-Conference (12) and All-Academic honorees (6), as well as All-America Scholars (24). Six Flyers have also qualified for the U.S. Amateur during Hoagland's tenure, most recently Cors and
Victor Caliguri in 2025.
UD was recognized by the Golf Coaches Association of America as a 2024-25 PLATFORM Golf Team Academic Award recipient. Dayton also earned Presidents Special Recognition as one of 75 Division I programs with a 3.5+ GPA for the last six consecutive years.
A proud Flyer, Hoagland leaves behind a legacy of excellence, integrity, and mentorship.
"Thank you, from the deepest part of my heart, to so many people at the University of Dayton.
Neil Sullivan, Tim Wabler,
Joe Owens, Mike Kelly, and Dr. Spina—thank you for the opportunity and for your unwavering support from day one," said Hoagland. "And to the entire athletics family—the SPAs, compliance, academics, strength & conditioning, athletic training, athletics communication, equipment, and especially everyone that has been in Suite 40—you are all the absolute best.
"Being the head golf coach at the University of Dayton has provided a special opportunity to create so many relationships," he added. "The friendships that have developed with alumni, parents, local business professionals and so many more mean the world to me. They have supported the Flyers in so many ways and the experiences that have been provided to the Flyer golf teams have been second to none. Go Flyers!"
A search will begin following the conclusion of the spring 2026 season for the next UD men's golf head coach.
