EUGENE, Ore - University of Dayton sprinter
Simone Bessong wrapped up her impressive freshman season on Friday at the World Athletics U20 World Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. The Atlantic 10's Most Outstanding Rookie Performer represented Cameroon in the 100m on Wednesday and the 200m on Friday,
Bessong was unable to advance to the semifinals in the 100m on Wednesday. She ran 12:03 seconds in Heat 7 and finished 57th overall. On Friday, she competed in the 200m, racing in Heat 5 and posting a time of 24.77 to finish 69th overall.
The Florence, Ky., native closes out one of the most decorated freshman seasons in program history. Bessong won seven conference championship medals, earned Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team honors during both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
In May, Bessong helped the Flyers capture their first-ever Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championship and was named Most Outstanding Rookie Performer. In July, she won the 100m title at the Cameroon National Championships, crossing the finish line in 11.87 seconds.
