The Dayton Flyers men's soccer team erupted for three second-half goals as the Flyers dropped Eastern Illinois 3-2 Friday night at Baujan Field. Dasan Robinson (Elyria, OH), Tye Stebbins (Zionsville, IN) and Omar Jarun (Peachtree City, GA) all scored with the last two as part of a flurry that saw four goals scored in three and a half minutes.
Dayton controlled a scoreless first half and Robinson opened the scoring just 28 seconds into the second half. Devin McKenney (North Olmstead) played the ball ahead to Antti Arst (Tallinn, Estonia) and Arst found Robinson cutting through the middle. Robinson buried it for a 1-0 lead.
At the 73:08 mark, EIU's Mike Comiskey sent a restart into the box, through the hands of Flyer keeper Matt Troop (Peachtree City, GA) where it was tapped home by Jimmy Klatter.
But Dayton answered 1:22 later as George Nanchoff (North Royalton, OH) and Aaron Swanson (Ft. Wayne, IN) danced around defenders. Nanchoff dropped the ball back to Stebbins, who blasted it from 20 yards to the top right corner for his fourth goal of the season.
Just 46 seconds later, Comiskey played the ball ahead to Mick Galeski, who chipped the ball over Troop from eight yards away to knot the game at 2-2.
Again, the Flyers had an answer, needing just 1:13 to get the lead back. Nanchoff, coming in on the right flank, crossed the ball to Jarun, who gained a step on the EIU defenders and headed the ball in for his second of the year and the eventual game-winning goal.
Jarun made a bid for a two-goal game as he nearly had the Flyers' first goal. After beating a defender, he was dragged down from behind but used the bottom of his foot to shove the ball forward under EIU keeper Mike Sims. The crowd of 922 at Baujan Field watched the ball trickle toward the wide open net, only to be swatted away by a defender at the last moment.
Dayton out-shot the Panthers 24-11 for the game as Sims made six saves. Troop tallied four saves for his third-straight win. Dayton is now 3-3-1 on the year while EIU falls to 2-5-0.
The Flyers will open Atlantic 10 play on Friday at St. Bonaventure. Kickoff from McGraw-Jennings Field is at 3:00 p.m. UD will visit Duquesne on Sunday at 1:00 p.m., before returning home to face Saint Joseph's on October 8.
