LOWSTUTER SCORES IN OT TO LEAD NO. 30 WOMEN'S SOCCER PAST SJU

Oct. 8, 2004

PHILADELPHIA - With a goal from junior F Katie Lowstuter (Cincinnati, OH) with just 2:41 left in the second overtime, the No. 30 University of Dayton women's soccer team defeated Saint Joseph's University 1-0 Friday night for its 11th-consecutive win. The Flyers, ranked in the Soccer Buzz Top 30, owned a 14-8 advantage in shots while holding off a Hawks team playing its second consecutive OT match.

UD, which improved to 11-1-0 overall and maintained it lead in the Atlantic 10 at 4-0-0, won its second overtime match of the season. The Flyers are now 14-4-5 in OT matches under head coach Mike Tucker.  The Hawks, coming off an A-10 Tournament appearance last season, fell to 4-8-0, 2-2-0.

After 90 minutes of scoreless soccer, the teams remained even through the first 10-minute extra period. But the Flyers earned their ninth corner kick of the match with less than three minutes play in the second overtime and would capitalize to keep the winning streak alive.

Senior MF Tesia Kozlowski (Westerville, OH) took the corner and played short to Lowstuter. The junior dribbled into the box on the flank and ripped a shot on a narrow angle that SJU goalkeeper Jen Kuhl tried to tip over the crossbar. But the ball bounced off her glove and into the goal under the bar for the game-winner.

For Lowstuter, the goal was her second of the season and first game-winner. She continues her hot streak after collecting three assists in two wins last weekend. Kozlowski now has two assists on the season and 25 for her career as she continues to close in on UD's all-time assist record of 28.

Senior goalkeeper Stacy DeLuca (Maryville, IL) made three saves in earning the shutout victory in the longest outing of her career (107:19). Kozlowski paced UD with six shots. Kuhn made two saves for SJU.

At 11-1-0, Dayton is off to its best start since the 1997 season began 12-1-0. The 13-1-0 start by the 1986 Flyers is the best in team history.

The Flyers return to action Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. match at Temple. UD will be back home to Baujan Field next weekend for a key four-match home stand. Next Friday, the Flyers will entertain Massachusetts with Rhode Island coming to town Sunday. Richmond and George Washington are in town the following weekend.
