MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH BRIAN GREGORY SIGNS NEW CONTRACT THROUGH 2013

Oct. 20, 2005

DAYTON - University of Dayton Vice-President and Director of Athletics Ted Kissell has announced that the University and head men's basketball coach Brian Gregory have agreed to a new contract that will run through the 2012-13 season. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed, but it reflects increases in length and compensation.

"This new contract includes incentives for performance and longevity. It is not just based on what Brian has accomplished in his first two years as our coach, but also for what we believe is to come," Kissell said. "Brian Gregory is the right man to move our men's basketball program to a position among the nation's best."

When Gregory was named UD's coach on April 9, 2003, his first contract term was for five years.

"I indicated to Brian in January that I'd like to begin work on his contract as soon as feasible after the season. The original contract included a clause to discuss his contract at the end of the third season, but there was no reason to wait. We didn't have to get to a date marked on the calendar to know that Brian is knocking it out, on and off the court."

Gregory was 24-9 in his first season at UD. He began the year by winning the 2003 EA Sports Maui Invitational (and becoming the only first-year coach to win in Maui). His Flyers ended the season with the Atlantic 10 West Division championship and played in the 2004 NCAA Tournament. Last year, with one of the youngest teams in the country (six freshmen averaged at least 11 minutes a game), UD was 18-11 and finished tied for second in the A-10 West.

CBS Sportsline.com and collegeinsider.com chose Gregory as their 2004-05 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year.

With a 42-20 two-year record, Gregory is off to the second-fastest start in UD history. He trails only Don Donoher's remarkable 45-13 record in his first two seasons.

"The support and belief in where Dayton basketball is headed, by Ted and Dr. (UD president Dan) Curran, is very gratifying," Gregory said. "Nothing like this could have happened without the hard work of our staff and our players. The players who were here when I got here bought into our system from day one. And the players we recruited that first year-last year's freshmen-came in and made great strides in their first season."

"I believe when we look back on these two years, we'll see that they were the launching pad from where we took off to a bright future. Our veterans have been in the system for two years, and we have signed two strong classes with more on the horizon. We're in a great place."

The Flyers return 10 of their top 12 players from last season. Included in those 10 players are last year's top three scorers (Monty Scott, Brian Roberts and Norman Plummer), top three rebounders (Scott, Plummer and Chris Alvarez), the assist leader (Warren Williams) and the top four FG shooters (Plummer, Roberts, Scott and Alvarez).

The Dayton veterans and newcomers Desmond Adedeji and Charles Little will be in action Saturday morning at UD Arena in the annual Red and Blue Game. The intrasquad scrimmage begins at 10 a.m. EDT.
