A pair of University of Dayton football players were recognized by the Pioneer Football League for their performance in Saturday's 52-7 win over Valparaiso. Sophomore safety Brandon Cramer was named Defensive Player of the Week and senior wide receiver Ryan Wrobleski was named co-Special Teams Player of the Week (sharing the honor with Drake kicker Ryan Horvath).
Cramer, a graduate of Anthony Wayne High School in Toledo, came up with two turnovers and scored the pivotal touchdown in the game. Late in the first half, Valpo appeared to destined to score a TD that would cut the Flyer lead to seven points (21-14). Crusader quarterback Ryan Doerffler had scrambled loose and was heading for the pylon but Dayton linebacker John Hoppe ran him down from behind at the one-yard line and stripped the ball free. Cramer picked it up on the bounce at the two and sprinted 98 yards for the touchdown that gave UD a 28-7 halftime lead. Cramer also intercepted a pass and had five tackles. On the season he is third on the team in hits (47 hits).
Wrobleski scored the Flyers' first two touchdowns, including an 86-yard punt return that gave Dayton a 14-0 lead. That was the fourth-longest punt return this season in NCAA Division I-AA. The product of Northville, Michigan and Detroit Central Catholic High School caught three passes for 38 yards and also scored on a 29-yard run. Wrobleski goes into the last two games of his college career needing just 37 yards to be the Flyer career record holder for receiving yardage. He currently has 1,842 yards and is third on the Dayton career list behind Tim Eubank (1,851) and record holder Pat Hugar (1,878).
UD is 7-1 on the season and ranked second in the Sports Network's I-AA Mid-Major poll, behind Pioneer Football League rival San Diego. The Flyers play at Davidson Saturday.
