After a trying Saturday for the rowing team, which included a race cancellation and an accident with the trailer on the way home, the Flyers rallied together for a strong showing Sunday in a meet on their home course with Duquesne.
In front of two hundred-some spectators, UD's Varsity 8 came away with a victory over Duquesne's Varsity squad by a 31-second margin, 6:00 to 6:31. The Lightweight 8 also posted a winning time in their race, 6:14 to 6:39.
The rest of the Flyer boats also performed well. The Second Varsity 8 defeated Duquesne, 6:23 to 6:56, and in the closest race of the day the Varsity 4 won by just a few inches when both teams finished the course in 6:24. The Novice 8 was able to win as well, 5:47 to 6:25.
The Lightweight 4 lost its race, 6:55 to 7:15. Since Duquesne did not bring a Second or Third Novice 8, UD's teams raced each other in an untimed exhibition.
The meet provided a good opportunity for the Flyers to tune-up for the larger races like the Atlantic 10 Championship as well as an in-conference opponent with a similar program that UD always enjoys racing.
The men's rowing team also came through for the program, coming to the aid of the grateful women's team with the trailer accident on Saturday.
Next up for the Flyers is the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championships in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Races will be run throughout the day April 15 through April 17.
