DAYTON BOATS ADVANCE TO THE SEMIFINALS OF THE DAD VAIL REGATTA

May 13, 2005 The University of Dayton's two entries in the 67th annual Dad Vail Regatta have advanced to Saturday's semifinals. The prestigious meet is held on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The winners of the morning heats automatically gained a spot in the semis. Last place boats were eliminated, and everyone else rowed again Friday afternoon in the repechage, or second-chance heats. UD's Varsity Eight placed second Friday morning, eight seconds behind Eastern Michigan. The Flyers' time of 6:51.67 was the third-fastest of the boats who returned for the afternoon repechage heats. The Flyers won their heat with the fastest afternoon time (7:17.71) and qualified for the semifinals which are scheduled to begin at 10:24 a.m. EDT Saturday morning. Dayton's Novice Eight rowed in the afternoon, and needed to finish in the top three of its heat to advance. UD placed second to Michigan State, and its time of 7:49.14 was actually faster than the winners of three of the six heats. The semifinals are scheduled to begin at 8:24 a.m. EDT. The championship heats in both events will be held Saturday afternoon.
