On Friday night at the Wittenberg Women's Invitational, the UD women's tennis team got in some early season action with Denison, Detroit, YSU and Wittenberg University. Although there is no team scoring at the event, the Flyers came away with five winners in singles and two winners in doubles match play on the first night of competition.
In the second flight, junior Kate Mellion picked up a win over Wittenberg's Kristyn Russel (7-5, 6-3). In flight four, freshman Nikki Dzubay defeated Emma Robinow of Wittenberg in a tiebreaker (6-4, 2-6, 1-0). Junior Kara Metzger was a winner in flight six, beating Kelly Davis of Detroit in a tiebreaker as well (6-3, 5-7, 1-0). Sophomore Megan Gray was a winner in straight sets over Stephanie Hill of Detroit (6-2, 6-2). Dayton also picked up a win in the eighth flight, as freshman Carrie Trigilio knocked off Ashley Cummins of Detroit (6-2, 6-1).
In doubles action, winners for Dayton were the tandem of Dzubay/Gray who took their match against McVehil/Maricevic of Detroit (8-3). The pairing of Mellion/Trigilio also came away with a win for the Flyers, defeating Earhart/Williams of Wittenberg (8- 4).
After completing the second day of the Wittenberg invite the Flyers will next be in action at the Marquette Invitational beginning September 23 and lasting throughout the weekend.
