Women's rowing faced the toughest competition yet this spring season on Saturday when they faced off in the Knecht Cup against a field of nationally-ranked and scholarship teams. They emerged Sunday with some big results.
Varsity 8's third place finish (Kate Butler, Jess Raso, Maria Otte, Elizabeth Perkins, Fiona Martin, Bridget Wood, Stacie Shockey, Susan Leopold, cox Tiffany Latta). The second eight fought through two tough heats in order to reach the finals, where they finished behind 1st place Buffalo City and Colgate with a time of 7:38.6.
The first Varsity 8 finished fifth in the Petite Finals, on the way defeating a number of scholarship schools and some schools that Dayton has never beaten before. Coach Mike Farrey said, \"Being non-scholarship, there is one easy goal to set and that is to beat schools that do give scholarships.\"
That was not the only stiff competition the Flyers faced over the weekend. The Lightweight 8, holding a #12 national ranking in the USRowing Collegiate Coaches poll, qualified for the the Grand Final but fell to national top-10 teams Wisconsin (#1), Radcliffe (#2), Princeton (#3), Georgetown (#4), and Central Florida (#6) and finished sixth.
The Varsity 4 was also able to make the second level finals on Sunday, after posting an 8:48.7 in their heat.
The Novice 8's events were cancelled on Saturday due to high winds. On Sunday the novices had the chance to race but only managed a fifth place finish in the third finals. Still, they remain hungry, looking ahead to racing in the A-10 Championships against the rest of the conference.
\"We used this weekend to prepare for the Atlantic 10 Championships by racing on the same course against most of the A-10 schools plus some other quality competition,\" Farrey said.
The Atlantic 10 Championships is the next stop for the Flyers. It will be held in Camden, State NJ, on Saturday, April 22. Last year, City 1st place Dayton achieved their best finish in school history with a close second-place overall points showing.
