University of Dayton senior defensive end Scott Vossler (St. Marys, OH) has been named the Pioneer Football League's Defensive Player of the Year, in an announcement made today by the league office. Vossler was joined by 10 teammates on the All-PFL teams, which were determined by a vote of the PFL's head coaches.
Other first-teamers from the PFL's top defense were senior defensive tackle Kalen Hemmelgarn (St. Henry, OH), senior Flyer Steve McDonald (Newark, OH) and linebacker Joe Ries (Cincinnati, OH). Wide receiver Steve Valentino (Solon, OH) was named to the first team on offense and was also an honorable mention kick returner.
UD players on the All-PFL Second Team were senior quarterback Rob Florian (Cincinnati, OH), senior defensive tackle Sean Heenan (St. Joseph's, MI), senior offensive guard Patrick McCormick (Louisville, KY), senior offensive tackle Ryan Pollock (West Chester, OH) and senior safety Corey Vossler (St. Marys, OH).
Senior running back Ben Shappie (Versailles, OH) was Honorable Mention All-PFL.
The Flyers were 9-3 in 2008, with all three losses by a total of 14 points. Dayton finished tied for second in the Pioneer Football League, and led the PFL in scoring defense, total defense, rushing defense and sacks.
