DAYTON, Ohio - UD senior Florian DeCamps finished what he started, scoring the first and last goal in the Flyers' 5-0 win against Robert Morris Sunday at Baujan Field. He scored three goals over the weekend to help the Flyers win the Dayton Courtyard by Marriott Tournament at Baujan Field and took MVP honors.
"It feels very good to have an impact on the team, especially, scoring the goal on Friday, the game-winner," said DeCamps. "It was very important to help the team and the shutout for the defense was amazing. They played very well. It was just a great weekend.
"It's a great pleasure to be named tournament MVP," he added.
In addition to DeCamps' two scores, sophomores Tommy Watkins and Josh Albers and junior Isaac Kissi also each notched a goal in the shutout against the Colonials. The win marks the 400th in the history of UD men's soccer.
"We needed a breakout game. We've been playing well all year but have missed a lot of chances," said UD head coach Dennis Currier. "I thought we capitalized on what we needed to capitalize on and have a little bit of a breakout game."
The Flyers put the first goal on the board six minutes into the match with a goal by DeCamps on passes from junior Alex Torda and senior Simeon Zapryanov.
Watkins posted his first goal of the season and the second goal for the Flyers by heading the ball in off a corner kick from senior Joe Olwig, bringing the score 2-0 in the 24th minute.
Senior Randy Dennis brought the ball up the line to Albers who squared it up for Kissi's one-touch past the keeper to take the score to 3-0, the lead UD would hold onto heading into the half.
The Flyers did not score in the second half until Albers tallied his first goal of the season with a half-volley in the box off a pass from freshman Jack Pearson in 73rd minute.
Recording his second goal, and the final goal of the game, DeCamps headed the ball in off a cross by freshman Alex Frenz. Junior Ben Murray also was credited with an assist on the play after the combination passes.
The Flyer offense controlled the tempo the majority of the match, showing a big improvement from Friday's game, out shooting the Colonials with 26 shots to their 6 shots.
"I think that we've got excellent build up play, we run very good patterns, and it's just quality and sharpness in the third that we've been lacking and it came off big today. It was a big contribution all around on scoring instead of just one main guy," said Currier.
Goalkeeper Tyler Picard recorded his second collegiate shutout and second of the weekend. Picard had three saves in goal against Robert Morris. He had a strong wall of defense in front of him. Five players rotated on the back line for UD: Randy Dennis, Ryan Handbury, Jack Pearson, Sonny Renner and Tommy Watkins.
"Defensively, we wanted two clean sheets and we got them," said Handbury. "We knew coming into this weekend we were capable of winning these two games but we wanted to make it convincing and we knew defensively if we just played smart people that would happen."
Florian DeCamps, Isaac Kissi, Ryan Handbury, Ben Murray, Tyler Picard and Randy Dennis were the Flyers named to the all-tournament team.
Dayton sees action again when they host SIU-Edwardsville this Friday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at Baujan Field.
