DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton Flyers (6-0-4) are rewriting UD's history books and are looking to continue it on the road this weekend against Atlantic 10 opponents Fordham (2-8-1) and La Salle (6-3-2). UD will start October with the second match of a three-game road march in the Bronx where the Flyers will face the Fordham Rams this Friday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. ET. They will then face off against the La Salle Explorers in Philadelphia this Sunday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. ET.
SERIES INFORMATION
• The Flyers have a dominant record against Fordham with only one loss to this A-10 opponent in the series. That tough loss came four years ago on Oct. 23 with a 2-1 final score. Last season UD edged the Rams 3-2 in double overtime on Friday, Oct. 31, to earn the No. 2 seed in the A-10 Championship, and then eked out a 2-1 win over Fordham a week later on Nov. 7 to advance to the A-10 Final.
• The UD women own the series against the La Salle Explorers with 14-2-0 record. The last time they met, Nov. 2, 2008, the Flyers shut out the Explorers 2-0 with both goals scored by junior Kelly Blumenschein.
FLYER NOTES
• The University of Dayton's women soccer squad currently has the longest unbeaten streak in the A-10 and is the only team remaining in the Conference that has not suffered a loss this season.
• Out of over 300-plus Division I teams, the Flyers are one of six teams that are yet to be beaten. The other teams include Stanford, South Carolina, North Carolina, Michigan State and Louisiana Tech (research provided by College Soccer 360).
• Dayton's 10-game unbeaten streak is best start to a season in team history since 1997 when UD went on an 8-0 run to start the campaign.
•UD was second in the Atlantic 10 standings with an 8-2-1 record against Conference opponents during the regular season last year. The Flyers started conference play this season with two 4-0 victories against Temple and George Washington.
•The University of Dayton women's soccer squad is currently ranked No. 5 in the Mid-Atlantic Region by the NSCAA. The Flyers held the top spot in this poll for two consecutive weeks to start the season. UD has moved from No. 34 up four spots to No. 30 on the Top Drawer Tournament 64 Rankings. They are also ranked No. 50 in the College Soccer 360 Poll.
•The Flyers have shut out eight of their ten opponents this season and challengers have just scored two goals, which tops the A-10 (Saint Louis is the next closest having allowed seven goals). The two scores against the UD defense came against No. 25 Auburn in a 1-1 tie on Aug. 28 and a Flyer 2-1 win over Miami on Sept. 18. The RedHawks' goal was the first the Flyer defense had allowed in more than 557 minutes (that's more than nine hours without allowing a goal). The UD record for shutouts is 13 set in 2004 by the squad that allowed just 12 goals all season.
•Dayton is ranked second in the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer National Ranking Summary in Goals against Average (0.184) and ranked second in Shutout Percentage (.800).
•UD has outscored opponents 20-2 with the help of a hand full of 4-0 victories, over previously undefeated Middle Tennessee State (Aug. 30), over Ball State (Sept. 11), over Temple (Sept. 25), and most recently over George Washington (Sept. 27).
•Dayton has outshot opponents 249-69. The Flyers lead the A-10 in the category, the next closest is Charlotte with 177. UD also leads the conference in corner kicks with 77. The next closest is Charlotte with 61.
UP NEXT
Dayton comes back to Baujan Field after their three-game road series to play Charlotte on Friday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. ET. That same weekend on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 2:30 p.m. ET the Flyers will battle it out against the Saint Louis Billikens.
MORE FLYER NOTES
•UD has four ties in its first ten games. That ties a school record that was set in 2007 (13-4-4) and in 1984 (5-8-4). The Flyers have also played in four double overtime matches. The most ever double overtime matches played by a UD squad in a season was in 2007 when the Flyers had eight 2OTs, going 4-0-4 in those games.
•Freshman goalkeeper Katherine Boone (5-0-4) leads the Atlantic 10 with a 0.21 Goals-Against Average, which is also good enough for the fourth-best GAA in the country. She has posted a league-best six shutouts. Her .905 save percentage is second in the Conference and 10th in the nation. Boone was named A-10 Rookie of the Week on Sept. 8 for posting two shutouts in the Hurricane Cup, against Navy and Western Carolina.
•Four Flyers are in the Top 10 for shots and shots per game in the Atlantic 10: senior Mandi Bäck leads the league in both categories with 49 shots (4.9 per game); junior Jerica DeWolfe is second in shots (36) and third in shots per game (3.6); senior Lauren MacCormick is sixth in shots (29) and shots per game (2.9); and freshman Colleen Williams is tenth in shots (25) and ninth in shot per game (2.50).
•Colleen Williams is tied for third in the A-10 and is leading the Flyers with five assists. Mandi Bäck is sixth in the A-10 and second on the Flyers with three assists.
•Jerica DeWolfe was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week on Aug. 31. The junior forward amassed three goals in two contests to help Dayton remain undefeated. She is tied for eighth in the A-10 with her three goals.
•Lauren MacCormick leads the Flyer with total points (12), scoring five goals and handing out two assists. Her 12 points and five goals are both tied for sixth in the Atlantic 10.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
FORDHAM
•Fordham's leading scorer, Leah Loguidice, has recorded four points off two goals. •Out of the eight goals scored by the Rams, seven different players have recorded a goal.
•Opponents have outshot Fordham 124 - 94.
•Jen Byer has recorded two shutouts in goal this season; against Manhattan College (3-0) and Richmond (3-0).
•The Rams are 11th in goals allowed (18) and 10th in goals allowed average (1.60) in the A-10.
LA SALLE
•Traci DePasquale was selected to the Atlantic 10's Preseason All-Conference team for the second straight year.
•DePasquale is second in the A-10 in points (16), scoring five goals and six assists. ,br> •La Salle is third in the division in shots (145), averaging a little more than 13 a game. The Explorers are second in total points (61) and goals scored (20) in the A-10.
•La Salle has shut teams out six times this season and are sixth in the A-10 in goals allowed (12).
•Melissa Sanger has averaged 5.71 saves a game in goal which is second in the A-10. Sanger also is third in save percentage (.889) and tied for third in shutouts (4).
ROOKIE SENSATION
Freshman Colleen Williams was named the Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week for her performances in the opening weekend of Conference play. Williams, of Titusville, N.J., tallied four points in the Flyers' A-10 wins over Temple and George Washington. She had an assist in Dayton's 4-0 win against Temple in its Atlantic 10 opener at Baujan Field on Friday, Sept. 25. Williams also tallied a goal and an assist in UD's 4-0 shutout of George Washington Sunday in D.C.
HURRICANE CUP HEROICS
Sophomores Kathleen Beljan and Emily Kenyon were named to the University of Miami Hurricane Cup All-Tournament Team. Both played the entire 220 minutes of the Flyers' two double overtime matches against Navy and Western Carolina and were key in keeping them scoreless.
FRESHMEN FRENZY
There are 12 freshmen on the Flyer squad this season. Midfielders Colleen Williams has started all 10 games this season and Alexis Garcia has nine starts for UD. Katherine Boone has started nine games as goalkeeper. Defender Alysha Mallon has started one game and seen action in all 10. Shannon Donoher (three games), Ali Forbrich (six games), Maggie Hinkle (three games) and Alle Pacetta (four games) have also seen action for the Flyers.
A-10 PRESEASON PICKS
UD led the way with five selections on the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference and All-Rookie Teams.Seniors Mandi Bäck and Colleen Gibson, along with sophomore Kathleen Beljan, were named to the 2009 Preseason All-Conference Team for the Flyers. Freshmen Alexis Garcia and Colleen Williams were selected to the 11-person Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Rookie Team.
TERRIFIC TUCKER
Head Coach Mike Tucker's Flyer squads are 113-22-7 in A-10 play. He is the only active coach in the A-10 to achieve more than 100 women's soccer A-10 wins. The Flyers earned a league record 13th consecutive trip to the Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship and dealt Fordham a 2-1 loss in the semifinals to give Tucker his 200th career victory. He went on to be named the Ohio Coach of the Year. UD has won seven of the 14 conference regular season titles. In addition, his teams have won the A-10 Tournament Championship five times (1996, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004).
FLYER SUCCESS
The Dayton women's soccer program owns an overall record of 341-151-36 (.661 winning percentage) since it became a varsity program in 1984. The Flyers made NCAA Tournament Appearances in 1998, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.
