NEWPORT NEWS , Va. - After seizing its first regular season title since 2004, Dayton is the top seed for the 17th Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship, to be held Nov. 5-8 at Transamerica Field on the campus of UNC Charlotte.
The Flyers (14-0-5/10-0-1) completed their first-ever unbeaten regular season and have posted a program-best 14 shutouts. Led by senior forwards Mandi Bäck and Lauren MacCormick (22 points each) and two-time A-10 Rookie of the Week selection Katherine Boone in goal, UD has allowed the fewest goals (five) in the nation. Making a league-record 14 th straight Championship appearance and vying for its sixth A-10 crown in program annals and first since 2004, Dayton will play at 8:00pm on Friday, Nov. 6, after earning an opening round bye.
Seeking to join Massachusetts (1993-95) as the lone programs in Conference history to capture three consecutive A-10 crowns, second-seeded Charlotte (15-2-2/9-0-2) also earned a bye and will play at 5:30pm on Friday, Nov. 6. Led by junior forward Whitney Weinraub (32 points), the 49ers have outscored their opponents by a 57-13 margin and enter the Championship riding a 13-match unbeaten streak.
The opening match of the 2009 Atlantic 10 Championship on Thursday, Nov. 5, features No. 4 St. Bonaventure (10-10-0/7-4-0) versus fifth-seeded and two-time champion Saint Louis (7-8-4/4-4-3) at 5:30pm. The Bonnies won a program-best seven league matches and limited nine of their 11 A-10 opponents to one goal or less. SLU is led by senior midfielder Susan Frederickson, who has scored four goals and leads the team with 14 points.
Thursday's second opening round contest matches third-seeded Fordham (8-11-1/7-4-0) against No. 6 Massachusetts (6-10-0/5-6-0) at 8:00pm. Making a fourth-straight appearance in the Championship and vying for their first-ever A-10 crown, the Rams emerged victorious in five of their final six A-10 contests and are paced by senior Leah Loguidice’s four game-winning goals. UMass won its final two contests to advance to the Championship for the first time since 2004.
Live audio and video streaming of the Championship will be available for $7.95 per day. Annual subscribers to All-Access for the six A-10 teams participating in the Championship and XXL annual subscribers will be able to view the action at no charge.
