NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Junior Allison Giner (Dayton, Ohio) and sophomores Kathleen Beljan (Hilliard, Ohio) and Kelsey Miller (Barrington, Ill.), the starting defense for undefeated Dayton, were named the Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Players of the Week for Nov. 2.
UD's starting trio of defenders helped limit St. Bonaventure (Oct. 28) and Xavier (Oct. 31) to just six shots as Dayton clinched its first A-10 regular season crown since 2004 with a pair of 3-0 wins. The Flyers' win over the Musketeers was their 14th shutout of the year, a program record.
Miller was also named to TopDrawerSoccer Women's College Team of the Week for her efforts. This is her second Conference honor. She was named A-10 Rookie of the Week last season.
Both Miller and Beljan were named to the 2008 Atlantic 10 All-Championship Team last season.
The Flyer defense is in the top five in the nation in several categories: first in goals against average (0.245); second in shutout percentage (.737) and save percentage (.912); and third in won-loss-tied percentage (.868).
The Flyers are ranked in several polls: No. 15 in the TopDrawerSoccer Tournament 64 Ranking; No. 24 in Soccer Times Top 25; No. 26 in College Soccer 360 Composite Rankings; No. 40 in the NCAA Women's Soccer RPI. The Flyers are also ranked No. 1 in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings.
Dayton is the top seed for the 17th Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship, to be held Nov. 5-8 at Transamerica Field on the campus of UNC Charlotte. The Flyers (14-0-5/10-0-1) have allowed the fewest goals (five) in the nation. Making a league-record 14th straight Championship appearance and vying for its sixth A-10 crown in program annals and first since 2004, Dayton will play at 8:00 p.m. ET on Friday, Nov. 6, after earning an opening round bye.
