PHILADELPHIA - University of Dayton director of media relations Doug Hauschild, the dean of Atlantic 10 Conference SIDs with 27 years of service, has been named the recipient of the 2009 Bob Kenworthy Community Service Award by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He will be presented the award - given annually to a CoSIDA member for civic involvement and accomplishments outside of the sports information office - at the organization's annual workshop June 24 in San Antonio, Texas.
"Doug is a tremendous ambassador for our profession, the University of Dayton and college athletics in general," said John Humenik, CoSIDA Executive Director. "CoSIDA is blessed by his long-term commitment to our profession and its people and this award clearly demonstrates that he ranks among our organization's most admirable people. He is a most deserving recipient of this award."
Although he spent 1981 to 1983 as the head fast-pitch softball coach at UD and still holds the school record for career winning percentage, Hauschild has made his mark by recording history instead of making it. As the director of media relations for the UD Division of Athletics, he serves as the primary sports contact for the football and men's basketball programs, and is also coordinator for the UD Athletics Hall of Fame.
"Doug is one of those behind-the-scenes contributors who is extremely well-regarded within his field because of his commitment, professionalism and diligence," said UD Vice President and Director of Athletics Tim Wabler. "He has that same tireless effort and passion for his community and by no surprise, has the utmost respect in all his volunteer endeavors."
Hauschild, who began his career as an assistant SID at his alma mater in 1982, was elevated to his current position the following year. The 1981 University of Dayton graduate has made his alma mater one of the models, nation-wide, for hosting events. UD has hosted over 60 NCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament games during his tenure. Hauschild has also served on a Dayton committee that visits first-time NCAA Tournament hosts to instruct in proper ways to handle the event.
As far as community service goes, Hauschild is second to none. He has devoted 30 years to youth coaching in four different sports, and served as several terms as a league supervisor and commissioner. He has been media coordinator for the Southwest Ohio Senior Olympic six times as well as working as a volunteer with the Special Olympics for five years at its area meet. He has also been a regular on-call apheresis blood donor since the late 1980s, and has been a finalist to donate bone marrow as part of the American Red Cross' Bone Marrow Registry.
Respected by his peers as well as the media, Hauschild and the University of Dayton were honored by the Football Writers Association of America in 1990 with a Press Box Merit Award given for outstanding press box working services.
More than 35 former student workers in the Dayton Sports Information Office have gone on to careers at the college and professional levels.
