It took all season, a nine-game winning streak and a perfect 8-0 record in the Pioneer Football League, but the University of Dayton Flyer football team is ranked in the latest rankings of both the FCS Coaches and Sports Network/Fathead.com polls. The Flyers entered the FCS Coaches Poll at No. 25 and the Sports Network/Fathead.com poll at No. 24.
This is the third time that the Flyers have been nationally ranked with the two previous occurrences coming in 1996 and 1997. The Sports Network poll rated the Flyers as the No. 24 team at the conclusion of the 1996 season and No. 23 after the 1997 season.
This is also the first time UD has been ranked in the FCS Coaches Poll.
The Flyers had been receiving votes for both polls throughout the season, but finally broke through after clinching a share of the PFL title with a 41-34 double overtime victory over Marist. The Flyers tied with Jacksonville, who is also nationally ranked, for the league title. This is the first time in PFL history two teams have been ranked among the top 25 in both polls.
The Flyers finished the season 10-1 overall. It was UD’s 11th PFL title in the 18-year history of the league, and the 14th time in school history Dayton won at least 10 games.
