DAYTON, Ohio – Dayton improved to 5-0 for the third time during the Brian Gregory era with an 80-60 win over Florida A&M in the Global Sports Main Event on Wednesday night at UD Arena.
Junior Josh Parker led all scorers with a Dayton-high 18 points on four 3-point field goals. Freshman Juwan Staten recorded the Flyers’ first point-assist double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 dimes. In five games as a Flyer, freshman Brandon Spearman reached double-digit points for the first time, recording a career-high of 10 points. Senior Chris Wright was an efficient 6-of-8 from the field with 15 points.
Playing in its third game in five days, the Flyers’ 20-point win is the largest margin of victory of the season. Dayton forced 20 turnovers and finished with 28 field goals on 22 assists.
Dayton’s bench out-scored Florida A&M 42-21 – more than half of the Flyers’ 80 points – as all 15 Flyers who dressed out for Wednesday’s game checked in for duty.
Florida A&M (2-3) was led by forward Yannick Crowder’s 15 points. The Rattlers are the second consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference team UD has faced after defeating Savannah State on Monday.
The last three times the Flyers have started undefeated through five games have yielded NCAA Tournament bids in March.
The Flyers conclude the four-game Global Sports Main Event against Cincinnati this Saturday, Nov. 27 at US Bank Arena in Cincinnati. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET and will be televised online by ESPN3.
