The University of Dayton women’s basketball team won’t have long to dwell on its 66-65 last second loss to UIC Saturday at UD Arena. The Flyers play at Wright State this Monday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Nutter Center.
UD is 2-3 on the season. In addition to the loss to UIC, Dayton started 0-2 with setbacks to Penn State (receiving votes) and No. 25 Michigan State. The Flyers’ two wins came at the Minnesota Subway Classic over South Dakota and the Golden Gophers. They were led by tournament MVP and reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Week Justine Raterman who averaged 18.5 ppg and 6.0 rpg. Patrice Lalor was also named to the All-Tournament team after scoring a career-high 25 points against Minnesota.
Raterman leads the Flyers with 18.0 ppg. and 6.0 rpg. She needs just 25 points to reach the 1,000-point milestone. She would become just the eighth UD player to accomplish the feat in her junior season. Kristin Daugherty was the seventh UD player to reach 1,000 as a junior last season.
Wright State is 2-1 on the year with victories over IUPUI (64-45) and most recently Delaware State (58-52). The Raiders’ lone loss came at the hands of Ball State, 64-63. Senior LaShawna Thomas leads WSU with 16.0 ppg and 20 assists. Junior Molly Fox is averaging a double-double of 12.0 ppg and 11.0 rpg.
Dayton leads the series 30-4 over the Raiders, but all four UD losses have come on the road; Dayton’s last loss to the Raiders came on Dec. 22, 2006, a 60-59 setback. Last year the Flyers won 79-58 at UD Arena, led by Justine Raterman’s 25 points.
UD Head Coach Jim Jabir needs three more victories to become the all-time winningest coach in the history of the Dayton women’s basketball program. He currently sits at second with 117, behind only Linda Makowski (1980-86) with 119.
Dayton will have a busy week, playing four games in nine days (Nov. 27-Dec. 5). After a tough loss to UIC Saturday, Nov. 27, the Flyers play at Wright State Monday, and then host Cincinnati on Thursday, Dec. 2 and Toledo on Sunday, Dec. 5. Dayton's game against UC on Dec. 2 will be the Flyers' Military Appreciation Night.
