DAYTON, Ohio - Two University of Dayton softball players earned recognition on the 2010 Atlantic 10 All-Conference Teams, as determined by voting among the conference’s head coaches. Senior Molly Meyer and freshman Kathleen Maloof each earned two nominations.
Meyer was named to the All-Conference second team as an outfielder and also earned a spot on the Academic All-Conference Team. Maloof was named Honorable Mention All-Conference and selected to the All-Rookie Team.
For the fourth consecutive year Meyer has been noted by the A-10. This marks the second season she was an Academic All-Conference selection and her first selection as second team outfielder, in previous years she nabbed an Honorable Mention nomination. During her career at UD Meyer broke five long-standing records. Last season she broke the UD single-season record for runs scored (44) and the career record for runs scored. This season she added to her runs scored record, completely shattering the old record and putting the new bench mark at 132 career runs.
Meyer’s 55 hits this season put her at 197 career hits, breaking a record that dated back to 2000. Adding to her record-breaking career, Meyer also shattered the career and single-season records for stolen bases, 64 and 34 respectively. She ranked 21st in the country for stolen bases per game (.62) and third in the A-10 for total stolen bases (34), fifth in the A-10 for runs scored (39), and in the top 15 for batting average (.333). Meyer led the Flyers in runs scored (39), triples (2) and stolen bases (34) and was second in batting average (.333), hits (55) and total bases (69). Dayton’s Most Valuable Player for the second year in a row, she was also named to the LOWE’S Senior Class Top 30 list, honoring the top softball athletes in the country.
In addition to her success on the diamond, for the second consecutive year Meyer was also named to the 10-person Academic All-Conference Team. She carries a 3.53 GPA in marketing.
Maloof extends the tradition of a Flyer being placed on the All-Rookie Team. Since it was instituted in 2006, Dayton has earned a spot on the nine-player team every year: Lauren Nacke (2009), Emily Stegeman (2008), Molly Meyer (2007) and Mollie Schrank (2006). Ranking in the top five in many categories, Maloof also earned herself an All-Conference Honorable Mention. Only one freshman earned a spot on the two-team roster and Maloof was the only freshman to earn an Honorable Mention.
Maloof was consistent throughout the season. She led the Flyers in batting average throughout the entire season and finished fourth in the A-10 (.347). Maloof had at least one hit in 40 games throughout the season and recorded 12 multi-hit games. She earned the first Rookie of the Week honor of the season for her performance in the UNI-Dome Classic where she recorded a .462 batting average with six hits, two doubles and two RBIs. Maloof ends her rookie season among the best in the A-10 in four categories: first in doubles (19) an fourth in hits (58), batting average (.347) and total bases (92). Her 19 doubles broke the UD single season record for doubles. She led the Flyers in batting average (.347), hits (58) doubles (19) and slug percentage (.551) and was second in runs (34) and home runs (5) including a grand slam in her last at bat of the season. Maloof was also named UD’s Rookie of the Year.
