DAYTON SHUTS OUT GEORGE WASHINGTON IN GAME TWO

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton softball team used 12 hits and 11 runs to shut-out the George Washington University Colonials in game two of a doubleheader. The Flyers fell to the Colonials in game one, 5-7. During the second game, eight Flyers tallied hits, including multiple hits from Molly Meyer, Kathleen Maloof and Megan Lee. Maloof secured the victory with her first collegiate grand slam.

Meyer and Maloof led the Flyers, both going 6-fo-8 and each improving their season batting average by 20 points. Lee contributed four hits in her six at-bats and Brandy Brown added another three. On the day, UD recorded 23 hits, 16 runs and only one error.

Pitching was also strong for the Flyers. Amanda Daly pitched a complete game one, with two strikeouts and five earned runs. In her final game for Dayton, Eva Rappe pitched a strong four innings in the second game, allowing only two hits while striking out just as many. Rappe’s 73 season strikeouts put her just three shy of her personal best. Sarah Wedel entered game two in the fifth to close out the game. She allowed no hits and struck out a batter.

Dayton started both games quickly scoring one run in the first inning. In game one, Meyer led off with a single and advanced to third after stealing two bags. Anne Maci sent a deep fly ball to center field that brought Meyer home. An interference call and strike out ended the inning.

GW wasted no time scoring in the bottom of the first. A two-out double got a runner on base and then a single down the right field line put the score at one all. The Colonials added two more runs in the second off a Dayton error.

Down two, Dayton put three runs on the scoreboard, capitalizing on four hits. Meyer started things with a single up the middle. She then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, allowing Maci to once again knock her home with a groundout to shortstop. The second hit of the inning came from Maloof and scored as Brown laced a two-out double to left field. Pinch-runner Daly entered for Brown and came home as Lee looped a single down the left field line. Dayton ended the inning up 4-3.

Dayton didn’t score again until the fifth, after the Colonials scored two runs in both the third and fourth innings. In the third. GW’s runs came off a single, a walk, a steal and a double. While in the fourth, four singles and a sac bunt scored another two. UD started the fifth inning with a single by Maloof, who advanced to second on a sac bunt and moved to third on a wild pitch. This allowed Maloof to score off a single by Lee.

The Flyers threatened in the sixth and seventh. During the sixth Meyer tripled with two outs, but was unable to advance after the final batter struck out. In the seventh, Maloof added another double to her single season record, but two fly-outs and a strike out left Maloof stranded on third.

Dayton ended the game out-hitting George Washington, 11 hits to their eight and also recorded less errors. Meyer went 4-for-4, Maloof record three hits, and Lee tallied two. Raime Cronkhite and Brown added a hit apiece.

UD started game two in a similar fashion, scoring one run in the first inning. Once again, Meyer led off with a single and stole second. She advanced to third off a Maci sac bunt. A fielder’s choice put Maloof on first and scored Meyer. With Maloof and Lauren Nacke on base, who reached on a walk, Lee singled, loading the bases. The final out came off a strike out.

After a quiet second, Dayton scored three runs off four hits in the third. Maloof reached first on a one-out single and Brown matched that effort with a two-out single. After Rappe entered to run for Brown, Lee hit a single and all runners advanced two bags off an errant throw, this scored Maloof and put Rappe on third and Lee on second. Megan Barrett added to the action, hitting a double that brought both Rappe and Lee home. Dayton finished the inning with a 5-0 lead.

The Flyers added another three runs in the fourth. Shelby Pohlman singled, then reached third after a groundout by Meyer and a steal. Maloof tallied her first RBI of the game with a single, scoring Pohlman and bringing Maci to third, who initially reached on a walk. Maloof then stole second and Maci ran home on the throw. A ground out by Brown scored Maloof, who was on third after a wild pitch.

In the fifth, Dayton needed one run to secure a run-rule win. The inning started with two quick outs before the Flyers recorded three singles by Emily Stegeman, Meyer and Maci. With the bases loaded, Maloof sank a long ball over the left field wall, to record her first collegiate grand slam and putting the Flyers up 11-0.

George Washington’s only two hits came in the first and second innings both singles. In the second game, the Flyers had 12 hits, three coming from Maloof, two from each Meyer and Lee, and five other players adding single shots.

This doubleheader marked the end of the 2010 season for the Flyers. The season was a record-breaking season for the Flyers, with five records falling. After breaking the runs record last year, Meyer added to that total this season while also breaking the single season and career records for stolen bases and also broke the career hits record. Maloof brought the new single season doubles record to 19 and Nacke brought the career home runs record to 17. UD finished 18-36-1 and 6-14 in the Atlantic 10.
