DAYTON, Ohio - Flyer fans got their first taste of Dayton basketball in the annual red and blue game at UD Arena on Saturday night.
The women’s team started off the action for the night as the white team defeated the blue team 17-16. Patrice Lalor scored eight points on 3-of-7 shooting from the field, including a perfect 2-for-2 from downtown. The game consisted of two five minute halves.
Between the men’s and women’s games each team participated in a skills competition. The competition consisted of an obstacle course competition, a three-point contest and a hot shot competition.
Josh Benson and Kayla Moses won the obstacle course competition with a time of 17 seconds. The obstacle course competition consisted of one teammate at a time dribbling around obstacle signs then finishing it off with a basket.
The next skills competition was a three-point competition, where Chris Johnson took home the title by defeating Justine Raterman with a total of 18 3-pointers. In the semifinal Johnson won the head-to-head matchup with Ally Mallot while Raterman ousted Luke Fabrizius.
The final competition was the hot shot competition, where teams consisted of three players trying to make as many shots from certain spots on the floor as possible. The outcome was determined to be a tie.
After the skills competition, the men’s team took the court. The blue team prevailed over the red team with a 22-21 victory. The game consisted of two eight minute halves.
In the first half, the red team consisted of Luke Fabrizius, Josh Parker, Brian Vonderhaar, Chris Johnson, Josh Benson, and Devin Oliver. The blue team consisted of Ralph Hill, Matt Derenbecker, Vee Sanford, Paul Williams, Matt Kavanaugh and Mitch Asmus.
At the end of the first half the red team led the blue team 12-11. Josh Parker led the red team with five points on 2-of-2 shooting. Vee Sanford set the pace for the blue team with four points, including an athletic layup where he split two defenders.
In the second half the teams made some adjustments. The blue team consisted of Josh Parker, Chris Johnson, Luke Fabrizius, Vee Sanford, Mitch Asmus and Matt Kavanaugh. Paul Williams, Matt Derenbecker, Devin Oliver, Josh Benson, Ralph Hill and Brian Vonderhaar were on the red team.
LSU transfer Matt Derenbecker was the leading scorer in the game with 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting from downtown. Georgetown transfer Vee Sanford scored six points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field including the game winning lay-up with five seconds remaining in the game. Both players will be eligible to play during the 2012-2013 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
Matt Kavanaugh scored seven points and hauled in four rebounds, and Devin Oliver had a game-high eight rebounds.
Both teams shot relatively poor from the field with the red team shooting 38 percent (8-of-21) and the blue team shot just 33 percent (8-of-24). Both teams combined to shoot just 6-for-27 from beyond the arc (22 percent), and each team had nine turnovers.
The men’s team will be back in action next Saturday at home in their first exhibition game vs. Walsh at 4 p.m. ET. The first regular season game is Nov. 12 at home vs. Western Illinois at 2 p.m. ET.
