DAYTON, Ohio – University of Dayton baseball lost its first home opener in four years after falling to Shawnee State on Tuesday evening at Time Warner Cable Stadium, 7-2.
The Flyers (4-7) were led by junior C.J. Gillman and junior Mike Coughlin, who both registered multi-hit games – each with two hits.
Shawnee State (11-9), of the NAIA’s Mid-South Conference, spoiled the Flyers’ home opener to earn a win against the only NCAA Division I opponent on its 2011 schedule. First baseman Phillip Butler went 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI. Jordan Williams (1-1) earned the win on the mound while Austin Dunfee earned his first save of the season after three innings with three strikeouts.
The Bears got on the board early as Butler provided a two-run homerun in the first inning. The Flyers would answer with back-to-back doubles from junior Zach Stewart and Gillman in the bottom of the first, which produced a run to cut UD’s deficit in half, 2-1.
Dayton tied the game in the second inning as freshman Mel Skochdopole used a sacrifice fly to drive in freshman Ryan Berry. Berry made his debut as a Flyer on Tuesday in the designated hitter spot.
In the next seven innings Dayton’s offense was held scoreless with four hits while leaving seven runners on base.
The Bears used a five-run seventh inning to take the go-ahead lead, 7-2. Senior Willy Balbach (0-1) allowed two earned runs in the seven to receive his first loss of the season. The Flyers threw seven pitchers at the Bears on Tuesday, led by junior Burny Mitchem’s three strikeouts in nine batters faced.
The Flyers continue a six-game home stand this Friday, hosting Oakland at 3 p.m. ET in the first game of the Flyer Classic.
